A few thoughts on my experience.

When i arrived at JFK to go through customs, as you would imagine the staff were all very serious and asking what what peoples business is for coming to NY. As i was being processed, the brother working and processing people asked me why i'm here. This how the convo went (bearing in mind it was all very straight faced lol)

Him - why you here?
me - concert
him - what concert?
me - nas
him - msg?
me - yeah (big smile)
him - you know they gonna bring az out? (bigger smile). Enjoy the show.

I thought to myself, now that's a welcome to NY! The city gonna be going crazy for Nas.

I made it my business to listen to radio the entire time i was there. Not once did i hear radio talk about Nas at MSG in the lead up (I landed on the Wednesday). That is crazy to me, wtf! The goat at MSG should be all over the airwaves far as i am concerned, especially hip hop shows! Must be politics i guess, but for NY radio not to big this up is just foul.

The next day was a Thursday and i went up to The Breakfast Club and met CTG. He was a real humble, down to earth guy i enjoyed holding conversation with him. BUT when he asked what i come out here for, i told him Nas. His first words, and i quote "oh, he ain't sold out msg". That didn't sound or feel right to me, i didn't like that. How can that be your first thought? lol.

Thursday night i went to a hennessy hip hop 50 reception and the love was in the room. Whilst there, talk was spreading of a huge special guest arriving and the rumblings were it was going to be Nas. It was quite an intimate setting so i started to loose my composure a little, thinking i may get the chance to exchange a word or two lol. Turns out it was Grandmaster Caz, which was dope nonetheless. But the hype was building

Now on to the day (Friday). I spent the entire day in queensbridge, saw the mural, sat in the park just looking at the bridge, drinking yak and reminiscing with my peoples. I felt the love for Nas from that very morning.

By show time, as you would expect, the love for Nas was crazy in and outside the building. shyt felt incredible. Met people from all over. Yet the guy right next to me was from queensbridge, same building as Nas, went to the same school as Nas. He attended the show by himself because the tickets were so expensive where we sat none of his homies could afford it, but he said i ain't missing this shyt for nothin. The knowledge i got from him was priceless and we chilled for a while after the show.

Best concert i've experienced and one of the best trips of my life.

Thanks Nas!
I appreciate this breakdown. Dope to hear your experience. Charlemagne needs to be smacked for that comment.

Those of us from the Tri-state saw this 1st hand in 2001 it's not just Nas stan babble. They been trying to act like he doesn't exist to prop the other guy up it's been obvious. Been going on 20+years blocking his diss records Angie had a show called the Takeover ect. There's a history it has nothing to do with him not making radio friendly records. There's no reason a song like Get Light shouldn't be on NY radio:martin:
Yea it’s obvious at this point. Nas addressed alot of it on KD3. He sees and feels it but keeps it’s pushing no matter what and still giving us classics :ahh:

Schooling people takes forever; don't bother
you can look at it the other way too...MSG was sold out and idk if more promotion would bring more scalpers into the mix to drive up prices even more given that it was only one night. the people who matter already knew but maybe the radio promotion would lead into more streams and more merch sales, etc

Nas sided with power 105 since ether days so hot 97 would probably never give Nas a nod, where nas just interviews with angie but not with the rest of their pessimistic crew (but Charlemagne is like that too if it wasn't for angela yee to tell him to cool it...radio hosts need to stop instigating beef like they are a part of the rap game, they should just be reporters), even if it was 22 years ago. the radio payola system prevents organic new talent to be heard if it wasn't for the internet. everyone migrated away from radio and the radio just bandwagons on trends if it's already popping elsewhere but no longer set trends or set the record like they used to...or they just promote industry plants already tied into the corporate agenda. the new york competition/market share mindset is tiresome and stems from wall street/corporate america -- buy up everything and wastefully horde it instead of letting society benefit or to have all to prosper and have an equal chance, smh....screw over disenfranchised people and then make them behave like savages out of necessity just for the elites who own the news outlets to only point the finger but not address full the issue or who caused it...fukking vicious cycle. rise above the fray. move elsewhere into the plenty and only the stubborn people stay

...if nas didn't have hitboy's connections, he wouldn't have done the 21 savage collab and instead would have subliminally addressed him on a record like how nas addressed jim jones or whoever but nas collabed with jeezy even after the radio debacle when jeezy had to debate about nas, so who knows.

This part isn’t true. Nas and 21 had spoken before there were any issues and had talked about collaborating and doing a song. 21’s dumb ass comments just put a spotlight on the entire situation so they made One Gun One Mic to show unity

While I always think Nas should do more interviews it's worth noting most of these shows aren't getting big names for interviews. Drake, Kendrick, and Cole haven't been to Hot 97 or Power 105 in forever. Same with Jay, Kanye, Eminem, Nicki, etc. I also think Nas selling out MSG without having to do interviews all day like it's 2003 is very impressive and a massive statement. Especially in an era where guys like Camron, Jadakiss, and others have struggled to sell out far smaller venues with no radio support either.

Artists are a lot more careful with interviews now. There's more focus on being mysterious (Beyonce, Kendrick) or carefully curating who is allowed to talk to you and what they say (Drake). Or complete radio silence like Cole. While I like artists pulling back or ignoring our current culture of nonstop access and consumption, I do think they should all do more interviews. You can go back and watch David Bowie or MJ interviews from the 80s/90s and find truth or value in what is being said. I def think that's important for art and artists. But I also understand them wanting to interact with this shyt on their own terms. Think about how long we went not even knowing Kendrick had kids, and then he revealed their names on the album. That's him controlling his own narrative. Same with Rihanna withholding private information until she wants it revealed.

Cipha Sounds has even admitted this. When super ugly dropped, Hot 97 did a poll of the listeners to see who won and Nas won so bad that they lied to make it seem close. He said it was the craziest shyt he’s ever seen. Everyone was so invested and it was like 90% Nas. They called it like 60/40 for Nas.

nikkas acting like Nas Stan’s arent justified for all the victory laps we’re taking. We’ve been through hell over our nikka.

I remember Dave Chappelle talking about how Nas’ rant on Power made Elliot Spitzer go after payola in NY radio. So I found this article:

Makes sense why NY radio resents Nas. He inadvertently ended the payola practice.

I remember Fat Joe on there, he kept yelling about it ain't as close as they saying it is

The power that Kevin Liles and Lyor Cohen had at that time can't be understated, they wasn't gonna let their guy get played, they made sure the media machine stayed behind him.

Sony had plenty clout too but be real they was dealing with high profile dispute with Michael Jackson and losing Mariah Carey, and they never gave a damn about their hip hop roster like that, they wasn't about to fight a PR war with Island Def Jam over a rap battle
