Where were you when you realized Nas is the GOAT? :wow:
In the gym on the treadmill listening to "Magic". He's been my favorite rapper for as long as I can remember... but after that 16 month blackout he just had with 3 straight fire albums back to back to back, in the 4th decade of his career...he solidified his spot as the objective greatest, imo...it's hard to deny.

If the only argument you have for him not being #1 isn't that Jay-z is #1 so you got Nas at #2, then you aint really saying nothing if we're being unbiased and basing "greatness" on real substantiated shyt.

For me Nas was one who shifted me from just listening to mainstream hip hop to more lyrical stuff when I heard Stillmatic when it dropped. Got into all the greats after that, but none really impressed me at the level Nas did. Some came close but from song concepts, technical ability, storytelling I’ve never placed anyone over Nas

The last time I saw him (2019) he performed newer songs. He came out to Not For Radio and also did Adam & Eve. He then went into the Illmatic-God’s Son bag.

He doesn’t really do songs from Hip Hop Is Dead & Untitled.

I got Tickets to the NY State Of Mind Tour and we have to keep in mind that since the pandemic he’s released THREE albums so thats a LOT of material in addition to the classics.

Also you have to keep in mind that Made You Look, The World Is Yours, Hate Me Now, etc are CROWD pleasers. Soon as you hear those gun shots from Made You Look the audience always reacts positively.

Unless artists are touring specific albums (for example when I saw him during the Hip Hop Is Dead tour he performed mostly songs from THAT album. During the Life Is Good era (2014) he performed all of Illmatic and then it was mostly LIG tracks (he closed with Stay)

Where were you when you realized Nas is the GOAT? :wow:

The culmination of the run 1994-1996. Got Illmatic and RTD in late 1994 at a time when I listened to west coast almost exclusively. Took a while to digest but summer and fall of 95 started getting more and more into the east coast sound. And Nas kept popping up, murdering verses on all these albums I was fukking with heavily. Infamous, Cuban Linx, 4,5,6 and Doe or Die, meanwhile listening to Illmatic more and more. By the time IWW dropped it was over. Nas was just on a different level 94-96, still never heard anyone better than he was in that era. And I wasn't in an environment where any of the negative reaction to IWW was present. Was legit shocked to find out later there was a segment of purists who hated that album.

BIG it was very similar, 94-97 he could do no wrong and was just on a different level. Nas and BIG will always be at the top of my GOAT list

That shyt was amazing. Especially that scene in the diner after they discussed Illmatic.

“I don’t sleep. Because…you know”
:ohlawd:

The only song from Illmatic they wanted to use but couldn’t get was Memory Lane:wow: it was supposed to be playing while young ruth was on the roof with young Wyatt

i know this was an illmatic centric ep, but after she murked dude at the end of the ep as she was driving away, silent murder would have been a perfect way to end the ep.
