Lemongrass, cherries, alkaline water

I consider myself pretty acquainted with unreleased Nas - I have never heard this one before and it seems to have emerged fairly recently? It's rare that I get chills listening to hip hop anymore but dammit this verse is just so beautiful - it has that haunting / brooding quality that made some his work on Lost Tapes Vol. 1 and God's Son so timeless. I like it so much I've tried to get the lyrics down - help a brother out if you think I got it wrong!

I've lived, I've cried, I've loved, I've died in war
I rise once more to conquer the vengeance
Slaughter, repentance, the drama, it's endless, the pain
My dreams are demented
With demons and witches which feed on my greed for money, for sex
Was hungry, was stressed, was young and obsessed with
Bentleys to dress, expensive tuxedos and gators with diamonds
My nature became cocaine, relying on iron with clips, in corners with fiends,
From cracks left foes to starve
I feel them inside my brain and they screamin'
I've tried to feed them
My foes were jealous, my soldiers not loyal
I showed them the way to water, they drink and they thought they could poison my cup so They would be rich without me
They bit the hand that fed them I unloaded my weapon, exploded and left them with death
To have them unwanted, them b*stards was with it
The country, the senate, they hunt for me but listen...
I changed my description they raided my home and I'm gone.

:damn:

Reading through some old Nas articles for LIG, I read that No ID recorded about 10 songs with Nas. Nas released 6 of them on LIG and 1 on LT2. Nas has 3 more in the vaults with NO ID. If they are as good as Beautiful Life, we are in for a treat... one day. I for one would love for Nas to work with NO ID more often. They don't have a bad collabo in my opinion.

I feel like disliking King’s Disease beats is a major tell that someone just wants to hear Nas rap over Premo, Pete Rock etc and anything outside of that is unacceptable. There is no argument for those beats being bad. If you want to say the style isn’t something you’re into fine. But Hit Bot is a great producer and gave Nas dope beats. And he gave Benny dope beats. And other rappers this year.

Basically...old heads mad about how new shyt sounds. And I say that as someone who has complained about beats on previous albums. But if we’re real...Hov rapped on quite a few questionable beats before Kanye and Just entered the picture. Vol 1-3 all have a few wack beats.

You're exactly right. Like Royce was saying, at this point its just a regurgitated talking point for people that can't think for themselves. Nas has some wack beats just like everybody else. Kings Disease has not one wack beat. I almost feel like starting a YouTube page to completely flip this nas picks bad beats narrative.

I've criticized beats from SD/HHID/Untitled, which I still think are very mixed and uneven for a high caliber rapper. But nobody talks about the fact that from 98-00 or so, everyone in NY was rapping over some wack casio key beats from Dame Grease and Swizz. DMX, Hov, Nas, Jada...but only Nas gets singled out. That's the weird part that makes this indeed seem like an attack or narrative. Like brehs...

:francis: those keys/synths...

I don't care if I get clowned...Money Cash Hoes is a terrible beat and sounds cheap as fukk. I hate that era of production. Nas didn't even work with those guys as much as other rappers did, yet he catches the most strays.

Some of the production on Streets Disciple, Hip hop is Dead and Nastradamus are valid complaints. I personally love untitled all the way through. But regardless 3 or max projects out of like 15 albums with countless unreleased bangers, is hardly bad beat picking. Its absolutely a narrative that is said so much by people that can't think for themselves , it has stuck with some. Like you said, I went back and listened to old jayz, 50, Dmx, jada, the Lox and the list goes on and on, but some of those beats all those people I named rapped on were absolute trash and even worse than what nas gets criticized for.

Thank you Royce

The guy was clearly a casual Nas fan. That’s fine but don’t regurgitate a narrative when you clearly haven’t done your homework. To say Nas hasn’t done anything noteworthy on dope production since IAm... is completely false. Dude said he skimmed through Kings Disease really?
