Because this is a board of mostly NBA fans that are watching a player and a version of a sport they don't watch often, so of course they'll relate it out to what they actually are fans of. College stars will typically have something in their game or personality that intrigues, entertains, or endears them to the general public. Despite all his accolades and success, Edey's appeal starts and ends at him being 7'4 and being able to walk and chew gum at the same time

And one of the things that intrigues casual viewers is NBA potential. That's what I was criticizing, discrediting Edey as a college star because he isn't a good NBA prospect.
People dismiss him putting up 6 straight 20 & 10 games, and having a historic NCAA run because he doesn't fit a modern NBA offense.

The nba has legislated defense out of the game. It mostly resembles rec league
You see all different types of play styles and strategies in basketball with teams playing to their strengths
Everyone in the nba is running high pick and role with shooters stationary in the corner no matter their personnel.

Those specific fans have always been present though. It was the same thing with Christian Laetner and Bobby Hurley 30+ years ago, and I'm sure it was the case before that.
