The ironic thing about this flaw though is that it mirrors the flaw of much of Lovecraft's writing. The human elements of his work were often interesting. The foreboding, the tension, the inner turmoil and horror. But often the actual big reveals were just...not good. And doing this as a TV show makes it harder because the entire point of cosmic horror is seeing something the human brain cannot comprehend, to the point you go mad. But here we see pretty typical, boring CGI monsters and it's just like eh...

I disagree with pretty much all of this.

Lovecraft was absolutely garbage at writing characters. Which is fine because the whole point of cosmic horror is how inconsequential humans are. But the human element for him was basically "teen in an 80's slasher flick on stand by until Jason kills them" status. Characters would exist until it was time for them to die/lose their mind/suffer a similarly horrible fate, etc. In damn near all his writing, especially the Mythos stuff. We barely get to know any character from "The Call Of Cthulhu", "At The Mountains Of Madness", etc.

On the other hand, his big reveals were A+. From "The Outsider" to "Pickman's Model". His writing is pretty much 45% atmosphere, 45% reveal, and 10% character.

As far as the bolded....not really. Seeing run of the mill creatures like shoggoths doesn't have that effect. Seeing Elder Gods or any of the god-like/extra-dimensional entities would do it, though. And none of those were seen in the first ep. Dream sequence aside.

Most new shows don’t get me in the first season but I’m interested to see where this goes. Gotta peep the first episode again before episode 2.

Will the whole episode be available on hbo max @ 9pm?
Or do you have to use HBO Now to watch the premiere?
