Constructed an Active Directory domain complete with file, DHCP, DNS, IPAM, RMS, WSUS, iSCSI Target service, Certificate Services, NLB, Cluster services, and others from scratch on a XenServer hypervisor.

Golden image + Powershell = :ahh:

Did you set up your DCs on Server 2016 Desktop, or Server 2016 GUI-less?? :sas2:

2012 R2 (w/GUI) for now. (1 away from MCSA).

I like to set up one of each so you can bounce back and forth between environments.

Next, will be a server for building Ubuntu VMs. Setup Ansible, Chef, Puppet, and Salt next.
I have an MDT and DSC server as well.

I still need to build a golden image for GUI-less though.

Very impressive, hold this rep. :ehh:

Why not put your ubuntu vms on your clustered hypervisors?
I've never worked with Xen before but I would imagine it would support Ubuntu vms.

How is clustering using Xen btw? Does it support live-migration with mismatched cpus? Do you have to be 1-1 specced or just reasonably close?
I'm asking because I may be going to a low-cost client soon so I may have to suggest Xen for them.

Great questions.
Right now, the hypervisor sits on Dell Precision hardware. Single server.

I have a virtual cluster on XenServer, but it is Windows.

XenServer supports NFS, iSCSI, Hardware HBA, and Software FCoE for the storage repository (or repositories). When I buy another Dell Precision, I'll have a true physical cluster. I only have some familiarity of clustering/load balancing with VMware.

As to mismatched CPUs, it is easier to keep the hardware the same within a cluster/farm. I'd have to play around more with XenServer to see if it is CPU agnostic within a cluster/farm.

XenServer is solid, but VMware is king.
Citrix just recently changed the licensing and features for XenServer too. People weren't too happy with that.

Ah its a virtual cluster on a single physical host.
Yeah when you get a second host let me know how it works out for you, I'm very interested to know.
Cluster performance and migration is going to be great migrating from the same hardware to the same hardware:pachaha:

When you get a second host are you going to setup an iSCSI SAN (i'm assuming your using local storage now)

How much are you paying for your Precision Towers? Ever thought about going with a rack and getting some PowerEdges? ServerMonkey has them for the low, I spent under 5k on 3 servers :ahh:

Spent over 10k on the SAN Storage tho :mjcry:
I already used my entire budget and its February:mjcry:

I'll probably do some version of a poor man's DAS. I should try to construct a SAN. I'll probably wind up buying a Drobo. Directly connect the DAS to the Dells.

I bought my tower off eBay for less than $500. Dual Xeon processors. Can handle a max of 192GBs of RAM.

I'm trying to do this on the cheap for fun. :ehh:

The Drobo won't be cheap, however. I'd like to do fibre channel, but we will see how that goes.....

XenServer supports virtual switches (Open vSwitch). I'll have to research for a good virtual router.
I'll do a bit more research to see if I can flex between virtual routing and switching and hardware routing and switching.

Would be nice if there is some intelligence (and communication) between the two ... something similar to Cisco converged networking.

Sounds good breh, you def know what you're doing and you're doing it the right way.
I def wanna hear updates when you get more hardware for it. :salute:
