The 60% drop in net income is short term and means close to nothing to the overall long-term financial health of GS

The point you were trying to make was that the Aramco IPO going to JPM hurt GS today. It didn't. The market spoke and GS actually outperformed JPM on the market today.

You see NAp, it's

Just read a Businessweek interview with the prince heading their economy. Very interesting. My big takeaway was a question.... who exactly is in charge? The prince was talking about wanting to get women to drive, and having to figure out a way to sell it to the fundamentalists. What good is a govt that has to ask somebody for permission to implement change? :leostare:

Its those fundamentalists, not dependence on oil, that is holding them back. Author mentioned how people would rather just go to Dubai to do ME business for those same exact reasons. They gotta :camby: the ahkis

The founder of the House made a deal with the whabbist that they will support the Saudi clan with motivated fighters to conquer Arabia in exchange that in the new kingdom they will allow the practise of sharia law. Over time the Saudi's have bribed the religious elites with money, building vast mosques in Saudi Arabia. Over time they allow them to support jihadist groups abroad as long they do not operate in the kingdom. So they can't implement fast change they want to do it slow. Because if tomorrow the family says women can drive the religious elite will call the family infidels and stir up a jihadist insurrection. Add on top of this the royal family has different factions from different clans with different ideologies. The country is one bad day from turning into Somalia in the 90s.

Another thing is that Prince Salman has had no experience in defense or economics. He was given the job by his pops to consolidate his credentials so he can be heir to the throne. The problem is that Saudi Arabia the throne is not passed by father to son. Rather from half brother to half brother to half nephew etc. Many members of the royal family are not happy about Salman being heir. Matter fact they call him reckless for his war in Yemen. I will say this he is ambitious.

Perfect explanation. Sums it up.

Because the religious conservatives will have the people behind them. There is alot of young people in Saudi Arabia who are unemployed and would join a jihadist insurrection. Remeber alot of saudi young men go join jihadist groups abroad. Sometimes they are the majority. ISIS has alot of support in the kingdom. There was pictures on twitter of high ranking members of the saudi military express support to ISIS. The thing is once there is a civil war it may never stop . Look at Libya,Iraq and Syria. Now the Saudis have safeguards. For example they have their military called the Saudi Arabian national Guard. And on top of that they have agreements with Pakistan and Egypt that they will send troops to help the Royal family incase that happens but it will be a shytstorm. You have the potential of iran taking advantage by aiding shiite rebels in Saudi Arabia. The problem with that is the places that have the most oil reserves are in the shia areas. So what you could have is the royal family fighting a war on two fronts. If the shiites are successful to breakaway from the Saudis then they will take the oil regions which is a major cash cow for the saudis. And with that gone no cash to pay Egyptian,Pakistania or Western mercenaries to fight for you. And the west would not send troops in the Saudi Arabia. I mean can you imagine US marines in Mecca and medina. You will have millions of muslims flocking to fight western soldiers.

I figured they had to have populist support. And there is no way they can get those people employment any time soon. Still though, where are the religious fundamentalists getting the $$$ to sponsor these jihadist groups? It's crazy that the fundamentalists can employ someone faster than the Sauds/ARAMCO

Saudi Arabia targets $2tn Aramco IPO as it outlines economic view - FT.com

Saudi Arabia targets $2tn Aramco IPO as it outlines economic view

Saudi Arabia’s cabinet has approved the long-awaited plan for a big transformation of the oil-dependent economy, promising to list less than 5 per cent of the state oil company, Saudi Aramco, which will value it at more than $2tn.

The so-called “Vision 2030”, brainchild of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the deputy crown prince and most powerful man in the kingdom, has been in the works for months.

Monday morning’s announcement of a cabinet approval was followed by an interview by the prince on the Saudi owned al-Arabiya channel, in which he optimistically asserted that the kingdom could end its reliance on oil within four years. Saudi Arabia derives more than 90 per cent of its budget revenues from hydrocarbons.

“We have an addiction to oil … this is dangerous,” he said. “It has delayed development of other sectors.”

He added that he wants to convert Saudi Aramco into a holding company and that all financial information related to the company will be disclosed. Subsidiaries of the entity will also be listed and its board will be elected.

“The vision is a road map of our development and economic goals,” he said. “A part of that is related to Aramco and this is a very small aspect.”

Oil: Lower for longer

Further coverage of the far-reaching implications of the protracted slump in oil prices

The prince, who is also defence minister and oversees economic ministries, has emerged as the key decision maker in the country since his father, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, assumed the throne. He has since worked with a group of technocrats to slash expenditures, reform energy subsidies and lay out a vision for a post-oil economy.

The collapse in oil prices, precipitated by Saudi Arabia’s decision to protect its market share rather than the oil price, has forced a re-evaluation of economic priorities in Riyadh, prompting the prince to press for the development of non-oil sectors. The prince cited mineral mining and a domestic military industry as priorities for development.

As the nation awaits further details of the economic vision later on Monday, the prince said the plan envisaged boosting housing and jobs for an overwhelmingly young population.

HOUSE SWEEPING IN THE HOUSE OF SAUD

The House of Saud finally came up with its so-called Vision 2030.
This is the long-term plan designed to move the oil hacienda towards a post-oil economy.

Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman – a.k.a. Little Salman, the Warrior Prince, the conductor of the illegal war on Yemen - went on national TV to talk about Vision 2030 as well as the so-called National Transformation Plan.

What the House of Saud wants is to build a $2 trillion sovereign fund. They will pile up taxes – but not direct taxes – to try to collect $100 billion within the next 4 years. Gas, water and electricity will NOT be subsidized anymore. Women may even be allowed to drive (!) And unemployment “may” be reduced from 11.6 to 7%.

There will be a green card program to allow Muslims from around the world to live in Saudi Arabia (assuming there are enough masochists eager to be submitted to this ordeal). 80% of the workforce in Saudi is foreign.

The House of Saud is unmodernizable. Many previous plans – far less ambitious – failed, as this one certainly will.

Not to mention they may hold as much as $7 trillion in US securities safely stashed while carping about the need for “austerity”. The day the average Saudi finds out, royal heads WILL roll.
