On the latest episode, “Replay”:
It doesn’t really bother me that “Replay” was heavy-handed. The original Twilight Zone was many things, but subtle was never one of them. Rod Serling and co. always made sure you got the point of what they were trying to say, even if they had to beat you over the head with it. It’s just one of the things you learn to accept when you watch TZ. I think subtlety is overrated a lot of the time, anyway.
I really loved the message that, no matter how many things Nina and Dorian do “right” every time Nina rewinds time, Dorian always gets attacked by the cop. It’s the kind of thing I always have to argue with people when the topic is brought up (even other black people!
). It really doesn’t matter what you do, how you talk, etc. Racist cops will always find a reason to kill because they just don’t like black people. Trying to play respectability politics is just playing a rigged game that you’ll never win.
It’s still too damn long of an episode, but at least at 44 minutes it’s not as bad as the other two were.
Especially since even the original series realized that mistake, and went right back to a half-hour format a season later.
