I can never see him developing the charm and charisma that the Joker has down the line and if this version came up against Batman it would be goodnight and that's all she wrote.

No offense man but I can tell who never read the comics or don't know much about The Joker, at all.

Probably the most famous Joker origin is "The Killing Joke" and in it he's a failed comedian getting chumped by gangsters. There is literally nothing in that version of Arthur Dent to suggest he's eventually become the character as we know it. That's the point of an origin story, though.

We don't know how old he is, dude has mental problems and was getting the shyt beat out of him as a child.

In regards to his personality, we see dude go from being nervous as fukk to coming out on DeNiro's show like:stylin:. We see him change when he stops giving a fukk towards the end. Dude stopped trying to make people happy and that's when people started giving him attention and he loved it. I don't think it's farfetched to think the guy that was talking shyt on live tv, standing on top of a car with the :blessed: while getting cheered on would become a charismatic guy.

The more I think about this movie, this to me is not a Joker movie, just a guy who suffers from a serious mental illness and is dwelling in self pity and feels like society owes him something. I can never see him developing the charm and charisma that the Joker has down the line and if this version came up against Batman it would be goodnight and that's all she wrote.

It's not so much that the Arthur Fleck character technically couldn't develop into The Joker that could rival Batman...it's that he won't, because the director and lead actor both made it to point to use the "Joker" name as a vehicle to tell a story that has little to nothing to really do with the comics. Even if they decide to do a sequel, they want to avoid him actually becoming the 'clown prince of crime', comic book character.

I don't think people can really be mad at those who didn't really enjoy the interpretation of the Joker when the person making it was anticipating backlash from people looking for a familiar, comic book take on the character.

To me, the movie felt just connected enough to the comics justify using the title it used. Phoenix said "You could take this character and put him in any movie", which is true. You could also call this film something besides Joker, lose whatever sparse connections it has to Batman lore (Interactions with the Wayne's) and it wouldn't really change it much.

I don't understand the pedestal this movie is being put on, for me it's awful and I felt awful watching it.

- It's got one of the most talented actors to ever live in it taking up 95% of the screen time.
- It's got great cinematography
- It's standing behind the branding of one of the most iconic characters/IP's of all time.
- It's also fodder for a good pseudo intellectual circle jerk for people who think it's too "deep" to be understood by those who didn't really enjoy it.

I was hyped when I saw that Joaquin Phoenix was involved and saw the trailer. I was also open to a brand new interpretation of the character, I kinda let those expectations go before it came out. But all in all, I really didn't fukk with the movie as much as I wanted to. As a whole it was pretty boring and derivative despite some beautiful shots and some powerful scenes from Phoenix. You can give those things proper artistic merit even if you didn't enjoy the movie overall.

it was pretty good. 8/10. cinematography keeps it from being a 7

this could have been great if the writing were better, but as it stands its a bit too predictable and on the nose.

that scene when he bodied that fat nicca in his apartment was brazy tho. it went from legit scary (joaquin looked hella creepy with that white face paint) to hilarious when the mini cac was trying to escape

Best scene to me.

I was bored to fukking death before that lol, then all of a sudden he merks the Yellow King and I'm shook, wondering if little mans is going to make it out of the apartment, very tense. The one scene that everybody seems to love is one that I don't, the Murrayyyy, funnaaay death scene.

that part was predictable af and the seams really started to show in the writing. the whole "im a mentally ill loner and society doesnt care!!!111" :pacspit: line was corny, you gotta show not tell. the climax just doesn't hit nearly as hard as the films joker is biting from (taxi driver, king of comedy)

Age is a moot point considering Jack Nicholson played the Joker while being in his 50s and was supposed 20 years older than Bruce.

Yeah, I don't understand the whole age thing. We've never known the Joker's age and like you said, we've seen iterations where he's clearly older than Bruce.
