The more I think about this movie, this to me is not a Joker movie, just a guy who suffers from a serious mental illness and is dwelling in self pity and feels like society owes him something. I can never see him developing the charm and charisma that the Joker has down the line and if this version came up against Batman it would be goodnight and that's all she wrote.
It's not so much that the Arthur Fleck character technically couldn't develop into The Joker that could rival Batman...it's that he won't, because the director and lead actor both made it to point to use the "Joker" name as a vehicle to tell a story that has little to nothing to really do with the comics. Even if they decide to do a sequel, they want to avoid him actually becoming the 'clown prince of crime', comic book character.
I don't think people can really be mad at those who didn't really enjoy the interpretation of the Joker when the person making it was anticipating backlash from people looking for a familiar, comic book take on the character.
To me, the movie felt just connected enough to the comics justify using the title it used. Phoenix said "You could take this character and put him in any movie", which is true. You could also call this film something besides Joker, lose whatever sparse connections it has to Batman lore (Interactions with the Wayne's) and it wouldn't really change it much.
I don't understand the pedestal this movie is being put on, for me it's awful and I felt awful watching it.
- It's got one of the most talented actors to ever live in it taking up 95% of the screen time.
- It's got great cinematography
- It's standing behind the branding of one of the most iconic characters/IP's of all time.
- It's also fodder for a good pseudo intellectual circle jerk for people who think it's too "deep" to be understood by those who didn't really enjoy it.
I was hyped when I saw that Joaquin Phoenix was involved and saw the trailer. I was also open to a brand new interpretation of the character, I kinda let those expectations go before it came out. But all in all, I really didn't fukk with the movie as much as I wanted to. As a whole it was pretty boring and derivative despite some beautiful shots and some powerful scenes from Phoenix. You can give those things proper artistic merit even if you didn't enjoy the movie overall.
