I trained once in the past month and a half :mindblown: Taking care of a child is tough work with training being so far from my residence. I have an obligation to my coach to obtain my black belt through him so i dont want to switch academies when im so close to the end. I'll have to find time to make it work i guess. Please keep doing burpees yall. 50 a day will keep you in good enough shape to compete in sparring.

I love Gi because its really the chess match. There is no physical advantage, unless you count grip strength. I tend to do well in no gi though, because im fast for a dude my size.

I miss training brehs :to:

I keep saying im gonna go back soon but I can never find that extra $200 in my budget and now I have plans for a house so it will be tough. it sucks tho, especially seeing my boy get his blue belt before me when he started like 6 months after me.

How functional is BJJ to real life?
If for some reason you find yourself in a situation where you have to fight your goal is to get in and get out. Rolling around on the ground is the last thing you want to do because you dont know who else is around.

Ive been playing w/ the idea of joining a gym mainly to get in much better shape (imo working out can only do so much)...but the functionality of learning a discipline is also part of it.

Theres a misconception that all jiu jitsu is, is rolling around on the floor. While this part is the majority of it, a good school will teach u how pulling guard in the street is a bad idea. Traditional bjj schools also make sure u know how to defend urself on ur feet because the floor is really a last resort. If u do end up on the floor in the street, u don't go tournament style and try to do flashy guard moves, u use sweeps to get off the floor and get on top. Tournament style sports jiu jitsu is one thing but self defense jiu jitsu is another. Find a school where they also teach stand up. If u end up in a sports jiu jitsu school u probably won't learn much self defense.

The longer you do it the more it just becomes part of your fighting strategy. If someone is squaring up with you with hands, your looking to get in close and wrap them up to either choke them on their feet or take them down and crush them with strikes. Like any style though, there are places where it can be a hinderance like for example when facing multiple opponents. It could help you defend yourself and minimize damage but not take out more then 2 people but then again, most arts cant guarantee that. 3 in shape men vs 1 in shape martial artist is usually curtains for the martial artist, friends.
