Brehs, how often do you guys train takedown techniques? We do takedown drills..but we very rarely go live with them

We do more drills then live. A lot of people get hurt training live takedowns so thats usualyl something you would have to choose to do during open mat. THe academies are still a business and if people are getting their wrists snapped, their ankles popped and their knees injured its bad for business.

:rudy: The rubber guard is all about flexibility. If you have their arm trapped and angle off to the side then you can use less flexibility but a good guy will usually square up with you and kill the angle....and then its all flexibility. I played rubber guard a lot a couple of years ago. I did all the butterfly stretches and I was able to get my ankle behind my neck. :merchant: I used it mostly to oomoplata and sweep and had a lot of success against purple and brown belts in no gi but I took it out of my game because I wanted to rely more on hip mobility and angling.

If you watch Eddie bravo, he dosent even angle off....he uses all flexibility. Again, he's a very good grappler but his style is attribute based. I also dont like his lockdown half guard cause it kills your own mobility...but if you like the style then stay with it.

I also don't think 10th planet is the evolution of jiu jitsu...look at the mendes bros. These dudes changed the way all the top level guys are playing their game. Jiu jitsu is evoloving, but I dont think 10th planet is paving the way..Just my opinion

Thats not true. I dont use it that much but from the lock down you can go to your side and hook under the opposite leg/thigh, then roll to your back with the leg hooked and bring the locked down legs kinda to your chest (hard to describe) , you can then sweep them on their back as you extend your legs out in the direction you want to sweep them. I like butterfly sweeps more but if you like the lock down it can be useful.

Jiujitsu is a gumbo. Everyone has something to add and the branches that we're able to develop off the simplest hip escape or sweep help everyone.

Everyone has a different style. Depending on atributes different things work for different people. Eddie Brave uses the lockdown very successfully...but I still think it limits your mobility compared to regular half guard. Of course if you have the lockdown and you can get deep under the other leg like you described, it can be a powerful position. But for me, I feel im better off without the lockdown, other knee on chest to keep distance and attack when i want. This is how I play my game.. someone else may decide to do something else.

Thats why i figured i'd ask how often others are doing it. If theres tournaments coming up with a lot of guys competing. Our Professor will put the timer on for three minutes. and you gotta take your guy down as much as you can in that time span.

That shyts a smoker though :whew:

What are some good exercises that compliment bjj to do in the gym? And does anyone else do a different martial art other then bjj?

Rows work wonders. Also, they have attatchments that are like Gi sleeves that you can put on equipment to work your grip strength
