yeah, it's weird. I'm not a huge fan either. I wonder why she's playing the character like that. I know Deb was animated during the OG run of the show, but I don't remember Deb being quite like this. Deb is almost coming off like an unhinged maniac. She always seems like she's on the verge of a breakdown.

It's definitely an interesting acting choice

It's annoying, but there's some logic to it. She's not playing "Deb". She's playing Dexter's projection of her, which is really just another side of his personality.

This was the best episode so far. I'm kinda disappointed that they don't care about the kill ritual anymore though. A lot of what made the show good Season 1-4 was how clean Dexter was with his kills, and the few times he slipped it had real consequences.

He's got 10 years of rust to shake off. That's expected.

I stopped after like the middle of season 6 or so. Do I need to really watch those before I get into this?

I get the gist of what happened. I believe Deb died, he got found out as a killer and ran off into obscurity

You might want to watch season 7 (because its better than 5 or 6).
But you don't HAVE to watch any more of the old series than you're seen. I would recommend reading a more thorough summary of the last couple of seasons, because the "gist" that you got of what happened isn't really 100% accurate.
e.g.

He did a "mercy killing" of Deb because she was in a coma, then he faked his death and ran into hiding, but he was never found out as a killer.

I would watch season 7 cause it's actually good,. But you can jump into this with what you already saw.
