I respect their choice to not feel forced to have a murder take place every single episode.
Before the show aired, I was thinking "how's Dexter going to get away with hiding a body every week if he's in a tiny rural community"?
I was even expecting that maybe he would end up "commuting" into NYC every now and then to commit murders, if his town weren't located that far

The last couple of episodes mentioned that the Seneca Indians owned the land where the white deer was found. I looked that up on the internet, and the Seneca nation is near the "Finger Lakes"... like a five hour drive from NYC.
