Random thoughts on this first round of the tournament:
- I enjoy the overall look and presentation of this. Reminded me of a live action video game or Saturday morning type show (which wouldn't be a bad concept, thinking about it).
- Metalik showed what I expected to see from him. Impressive.
- Saez was impressive, considering I expected him to be a complete jabroni. While his facial and body expressions could be toned down, he's not bad for a guy whose country didn't have wrestling before him.
- Can't say the same for Hoho, who seemed to be over with the neckbeards solely for how they can chant his name. I don't wanna hate on him too much, but he was just bad. Weak strikes, not much grasp on selling, he couldn't chain together his moves like how he wanted. Just a general lack of...looking like he belonged in there. He seemed lost.
Surprised he got the W, but I'm guessing that's more because WWE's trying to get footholds in China.
- Daivari is already better than his brother in this short match I saw him in, and I'm surprised he didn't at least last another round or two based off his look and chinlocky style which is a WWE staple and preference.
- Glad to see the homie Cedric Alexander make it to WWE. ROH squandered him big time. He delivered like I knew he could.
- It's kinda hard saying much about the "big" names in this, I know what they can do. What's worth saying a bit more about is the dudes who are still a mystery to me, like a Hoho Lun or Clement Petiot.
- Speaking of Petiot, I liked the idea of a Malenko/Benoit style shooter in this, but he couldn't really live up to that archetype. He was good, but rather forgettable.
- Ibushi's rep and ring work speaks for itself.
- Sean Maluta was good. I thought that dive was a bit reckless, but I liked the sell of desperation in it, that you might not get a shot again. He probably gets a shot in the future based off bloodline and competent ring work.
- Bryan and Mauro are the best WWE commentary team in maybe a decade.
This is good, but will definitely get more interesting the further in we go, once we get past the first round.
