Why was it a bad idea

Carpenter felt it made Michael less of a shape and a force and just more of something you could understand and more of a person. He didn't want Michael to have any history and wanted him to remain enigmatic and just a killing force and pure evil. Giving him a connection to Laurie gave a reason to why he was stalking her as opposed to it being just one fukked up day. And I've always agreed with that. But again, that's my preference. I don't need to or want to know the reason why evil is what it is because then it's less scary for me and I care less, ironically.

DEADLINE: How do you take it when Hollywood keeps milking your career by recycling movies like Halloween, Assault On Precinct 13, and The Thing, and why didn’t you direct any of the Halloween sequels yourself?
CARPENTER: I didn’t think there was any more story, and I didn’t want to do it again. All of my ideas were for the first Halloween – there shouldn’t have been any more! I’m flattered by the fact that people want to remake them, but they remake everything these days, so it doesn’t make me that special. But Michael Myers was an absence of character. And yet all the sequels are trying to explain that. That’s silliness – it just misses the whole point of the first movie, to me. He’s part person, part supernatural force. The sequels rooted around in motivation. I thought that was a mistake. However, I couldn’t stop them from making sequels. So my agents said, ‘Why don’t you become an executive producer and you can share the revenue?’ But I had to write the second movie, and every night I sat there and wrote with a six pack of beer trying to get through this thing. And I didn’t do a very good job, but that was it. I couldn’t do any more.

He was drunk lol. He said he had no ideas and the only way it got done was due to a 6 pack. And I know he had a sweet spot for Jamie lee, especially since she was having trouble getting serious work at the time and he wanted to hook her up.

IT'S ALL GOOD, WE OBVIOUSLY HAVE A CLEAR DIFFERENCE OF OPINION, BUT WHAT MATTERS IS THAT WE BOTH SEEM TO BE HORROR ENTHUSIASTS. IT'S ALL A MATTER OF PREFERENCE, THERE'S NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER. I'M JUST A LOYALIST WHEN IT COMES TO CLASSIC HORROR FRANCHISES AND ALWAYS LIKE TO TIE THINGS TOGETHER. I REALLY CAN APPRECIATE ALL THE HALLOWEEN MOVIES (OUTSIDE OF RESURRECTION), SO IT DOESN'T MAKE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE EITHER WAY. I JUST WISH THEY WOULDA FOUND A WAY TO TIE THEM ALL TOGETHER AND I TRULY DO BELIEVE THAT THEY COULD HAVE MADE THE SAME EXACT MOVIE AND STILL TIED IT TO THE OTHERS (SHE COULDA STILL BEEN HIS SISTER AND NOTHING IN THE MOVIE WOULDA BEEN MUCH DIFFERENT THAN IT ALREADY WAS). IT SEEMS LIKE FILMMAKERS ALWAYS LIKE TO KEEP THINGS "FRESH" NOWADAYS. I AINT MAD AT EM, AT LEAST WE GOT ANOTHER COOL HALLOWEEN MOVIE OUTA IT.

This fell amazingly flat to me. I thought this was supposed to be a proper sequel, not a 75% uninspired remake where every clever callback is overshadowed by two unnecessary callbacks (read: lazy copied scenes).

While the tracking shot in the suburbs was cool, I thought they did an incredibly poor part of building suspense around Michael who is way too visible and therefore never works as the unseen stalker which was elemental to the OG film. Outside of the movement light sensor scene, there was almost no build-up to most of the kills so there's nothing scary to it. Michael is scary because you see some 7 foot guy with a mask on staring at you from 20 yards away, and when you blink he's gone. But then you spot him from the corner of your eye a minute later and that's when you realize this guy is stalking you but you can't keep track of him. It certainly doesn't help that outside of Allyson and the cop, there's no reason to care about anyone's fate so the kills fall more in Friday the 13th category (thank god they're dead!) than proper Halloween (oh shyt, I hope they'll make it!).

And although it has been said enough times, I also want to emphasize that the twist regarding "New Loomis" was wack as shyt and achieved absolutely nothing. That's just a good 5 to 10 minutes of precious screentime they threw away on an angle that didn't work. I did like the final act though, mostly because there is genuine suspense when Laurie goes hunting for Michael in her own home, but it was also a painful reminder that the movie definitely needed this hidden, lurking Michael more than stat-padding killer Michael.
