'Black Panther' ticket GoFundMe more than doubles goal

A crowdfunding campaign to help children in Harlem see Black Panther in February has more than doubled its goal and now includes celebrity donors as well.

The fundraiser is currently at over $24,000 of its $10,000 goal, with all extra proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Club of Harlem.

“The release of Marvel’s film the Black Panther is a rare opportunity for young students (primarily of color) to see a black major cinematic and comic book character come to life,” campaign organizer Frederick Joseph wrote in the GoFundMe description. “This representation is truly fundamental for young people, especially those who are often underserved, unprivileged, and marginalized both nationally and globally.”

The campaign will send approximately 300 kids to see Black Panther in theaters and covers the cost of a Manhattan movie ticket, snacks, and adult chaperones. Joseph received criticism about the pricing on Twitter, but for the most part feedback for his campaign has been positive.

The GoFundMe also caught the attention of J.J. Abrams and wife Katie McGrath, who donated $10,000, among others.

Black Panther releases in theaters Feb. 16.

‘Black Panther’ Poised To Pounce On B.O.: Advance Ticket Sales Beating ‘Captain America: Civil War’

He hasn’t even hit tracking yet, but Black Panther from Disney/Marvel is already a hot ticket out of the gate. After tickets went on sale Monday night, Black Panther is already outstripping Captain America: Civil War as Fandango’s best-selling MCU title in the first 24 hours of presales. Captain America: Civil War kicked off the opening of summer 2016 during the first weekend of May with $179M.

Now there’s never a direct correlation between great advance ticket sales and anticipated weekend box office, however, we’re talking about a Marvel release here and presales are part of the barometer for determining opening weekends. Black Panther opens on Feb. 16, which is part of the four-day President’s Day holiday weekend and adjacent to Valentine’s Day which falls on a Wednesday this year.

Industry estimates do not believe at this point in time that Black Panther will emulate Civil War‘s opening despite the strong. If that’s the case, Black Panther would not only become the highest opening of all-time for a February release, besting Fox/Marvel’s R-rated Deadpool ($132.4M), but the best opening before summer. Currently, non-Disney estimates before tracking believe Black Panther will post a $80M-$85M start with a possible shot at $100M-plus.

In a recent Fandango survey of more than 8K moviegoers, Black Panther was voted as one of the year’s top two most anticipated movies, ranking second only to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War which opens on May 4. Panther star Chadwick Boseman was also voted by the fans as the most anticipated comic book hero in a standalone movie, while co-stars Danai Gurira & Winston Duke were picked among the rising stars of 2018, and Michael B. Jordan as one of 2018’s most anticipated screen villains. Creed director Ryan Coogler directed and co-wrote Black Panther.

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther is already set to have a huge debut at the box office in February. Fandango reports that the first 24 hours of ticket presales for the film were the largest it’s ever seen for a Marvel movie. The record was previously held by Captain America: Civil War, which was released in 2016.

In a press release, Fandango also reported results from a user survey, saying Black Pantherwas 2018’s second most-anticipated movie (behind Avengers: Infinity War) and that star Chadwick Boseman was the most-anticipated standalone comic book movie hero.

This should come as no surprise. Last summer, the critical and box office response to DC’s Wonder Woman proved unequivocally that representation is important to movie-going audiences, and that a superhero doesn’t have to be played by a white dude named Chris to fill seats. With $100.5 million in North America and an additional $122.5 million internationally, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman had the biggest-ever opening weekend for a film directed by a woman. It was a box office giant by any measure — the 16th superhero movie ever to break $100 million domestically in its first weekend, and the third highest-grossing DC movie behind Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

And the social media excitement around Black Panther has been unavoidable in recent months. Kendrick Lamar recently announced that he produced the soundtrack at the Ryan Coogler’s personal request, and debuted a new song with Vince Staples as part of the film’s latest TV spot. The first full trailer was viewed 89 million times in its first 24 hours, and year-end data compiled by Twitter showed that Black Panther was the ninth most tweeted about film of 2017, the only one on the list that hadn’t even been released yet. High expectations can be a recipe for frustration when people actually see the movie — look at the endless online war over The Last Jedi — but the film’s fandom still has a few weeks to enjoy their anticipation.
