The Republican Party back in 2012 was full of crazies. There is no redeeming qualities with these conservatives. Mitt Romney likes to portray himself as a moderate but he still played that Tea Party angle back in 2012.

The mainstreaming of right wing lunacy started started to form during the Republican revolution Newt Gingrich years when they started taking this confrontational obstruction stance, and suggesting Clinton is somehow not legitimate or “not my president.” Of course it seems mild compared to what they did in the Obama years but it was still unprecedented in modern American history. And Clinton was a white guy from Arkansas, but just being a 60’s liberal hippie (who later sold out) was enough for the hard right to see his neoliberal ass as some kind existential threat.

The rise of talk radio around that time contributed a lot to the radicalization. Of course you have Timothy McVeigh, abortion clinic bombers, and a record rise in militia membership, but it was still fringe.

From there, you get this disturbing jingoism/nationalism manifesting itself in the support of Middle east warmongering during the Bush years, and the further demonization of all “liberals” as un-American.

Then you had the mini-rise of that dolt Sarah Palin (thanks John McCain), and the tea party, the precursors to Trump and MAGA. They're only going to get crazier.

100% spot on. What we have is 30-45% of the population that has been brainwashed for damn near 30 years of war propaganda from Fox News and hate radio that liberals are the enemy. The GOP establishment allowed this to happen and encouraged it because it galvanized the base. Look at the damage the Koch brothers have done supporting the Tea Party. However after every lost to Democrats the base got more radicalized. Under the surface there was a rebellion bubbling. The two events that led to the base revolting was George W Bush’s attempt with immigration reform at the end of his second term. And Obama defeating “RINO” republicans in 2008 and 2012. We have to understand the McCain campaign picked Sarah Palin because she was popular with the far right base. Romney picked Paul Ryan because he was very popular with the Tea Party base. But after every lost the base was enraged.

The worst thing to happen to the GOP and American politics was Trump winning in 2016. This basically confirmed to the base that going far right wins elections and that moderates lose elections. That’s why I don’t believe the GOP will ever moderate. Even though Trump lost this year the excuse will be “voter fraud.” This will be the excuse the excuse state legislatures controlled by the GOP will use to pass even more stringent voter suppression initiatives going into 2022 and 2024. And since they have a tight grip in the courts gerrymandering and voter suppression will not addressed at least for another decade.

The evolution of the far right base is frightening. In the 90s it was religious extremism fighting the culture wars. In the 2000s it was anti-Islamic and anti Mexican/Central American. In the 2010s it was this insurgent force that was opposed to a black man in the WH who they thought was going to bring socialism. This is where the GOP establishment pushed the far right into the political mainstream. Then with Trump you have the base fully embracing fascism. Post Trump it’s likely the alt right will get more influence in the party pushing it into a white nationalist party. The GOP establishment said nothing to Trump until now because he was their guy. And he was a bumbling idiot. I can imagine a in the future, a more competent and Machiavellian fascist right wing populist would get the the same amount of loyalty.

Romney even auditioned for SoS at Trump Tower like a pathetic Apprentice contestant. Power must be intoxicating cause these dudes are financially set for generations, but they gamble their legacies for proximity to a two bit hustler from Jamaica, Queens.

A dude like Gholiani could have rode off in the sunset as America’s mayor.

Shameful.
Trump could probably really get these dudes to play Boar on the floor.
