For many reasons. The main one is that Biden stood behind the first black POTUS. He never tried to undermine him. He was loyal. That's the reason.

He had 4 years to do as much as possible so he wasn't completely blown out in the south with Biden running up the margins. His losses in the south changed the trajectory of the election and caused Biden to become the prohibitive favorite to win it all.
I wish he didn't run and had found a successor because he's clearly not the guy that's gonna get the stuff he's talking about done. There's a certain polarization around even his name. He helped further the progressive movement but he's taken things as far as he can.
