Tarrare was a French spy who apparently had an insatiable appetite to the point where it was heavily rumored he ate a two month old baby (the baby disappeared and no trace was ever found)

The title of the episode is symbolic of the fact that the ep takes place in Paris, France and Vanessa is cooking and serving human remains to people.

To your point, I myself wouldn’t have made the episode the season finale. The writer of the episode, Stefani Robinson, said the episode wasn’t initially intended to be the finale but that they felt that Van’s final conversation with her friend where her friend says “Lets go home” was indicative of how they felt they wanted the audience to feel going into Season 4. That it was time to go back to Atlanta.

I personally think New Jazz or Cancer Attack should have been the finale. Leaning more towards Cancer Attack but they went with their gut and who the hell am I to complain?

Damn I've lived in France/been around french people most of my life and I never heard of this. Wonder how they came about that damn near unknown piece of trivia and why it's the guys in the cité that are yelling his name out. Makes more sense now, even though I still don't understand why they're eating human hands in the first place. Maybe just some overall criticism about fancy environments. And I understand Van is going through it but her actions were just way too disjointed for me to make sense, even knowing she's in a bad place. But tbh speaking french myself I think her speaking english with a forced french accent was really what made the whole episode kind of tiring.

Yeah I understand the thought process of having it as the last episode due to that conversation, but yeah Cancer Attack would've been good too, Paper Boi's already pissed off due to his phone so it would've been a perfect "fukk this, let's go back home" situation

Anyways just a minor grip, hope they don't take years before the next season!

Stefani Robinson said she was on a Facebook Group that shared strange & freaky stories and someone posted the Wikipedia for Tarrare and thats how she came across the name & narrative.

My take on the fried hands harkens back to Donald & Stephen’s states thesis for the season, which is “The Curse Of Whiteness”. Tarrare is an episode about excess. Van, through her persona, is living in excess amongst rich white people. Her relationship with Alexander Skarsgard was excessively psychosexual. Her carrying around french bread and beating the shyt out of white dudes in museums was excessively wacky and violent. Her working at a restaurant and serving human remains is excess for what? Simply the sake of excess. This is what white people, who have everything at their disposal, are reduced to in order to experience stimulation. EVERYTHING has to be in excess or exaggerated or its not stimulating; because “normal” isn’t enough for rich white people.

Think of the last scene. You got a rich white man in a luxury hotel in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. He invites a woman over, offers her expensive wine, and instead of doing what NORMAL males would do, which is to engage in sexual intercourse, he instead chooses to be PISSED ON. EXCESS for the sake of excess.

THATS the curse of whiteness.

Also season 4 is coming this Fall so there won’t be a long wait at all

The great thing about what their doing with Van and Earn is that Van’s reasoning for being distant makes PERFECT sense. Earn and Alfred are traveling, Earn IS hella busy, and Van IS staying out the way, not being a nuisance, and doing her own thing.

Earn’s reasoning makes sense as well. He’s now used to being the responsible one, the one who makes sure everything is ok. So it makes sense that he’d want to make sure his daughter’s mother is ok, ESPECIALLY while she’s in his orbit.

The reasoning makes sense, but what I don't understand is...why is she tagging along the group at all in the first place? Europe is like 30 countries, plus doesn't she have some roots in Germany? If she's doing her own thing, why do it in the crew's/Earn's orbit?

Because she loves Earn and wants to be around him. In my opinion its really that simple. She might ignore his texts, his calls, his inquiries on her whereabouts and all of that. But she WANTS his attention. She’s always wanted his attention. Think about all the shyt she put up with in Season 1. How hurt she was by his rejection of her feelings in season 2. A woman whose loves you will put up with a lot of shyt. I think she saw Earn’s potential before even HE did and she always believed in him. Now that he’s recognized that potential she doesn’t want to be left behind, she either consciously or unconsciously wants to be a PART of his life in all aspects and she can’t come out and say it because the last time she did he was unreceptive

Yeah I guess I was more wondering what the specific connection with Paris/France was, and was surprises since neither Tarrare nor "eating hands" links to something culturally well-known here (even though Tarrare was a real dude, he's not a known cultural reference even fr excess, that would be Gargantua by Rabelais), as opposed for example to the whole blackface/Sint-Niklaas thing in the Netherlands. But the whole criticizing excess makes a whole lot of sense. Indeed, excess for the sake of excess.

On the other hand the whole "eating something under a towel" is real, but instead of hands it's this small bird called Ortolan, and it's actually forbidden to chase and cook it. It's basically put into a cage for like 3 weeks and then stuffed, and you supposedly eat it entirely (bones and all) at once

Yeah I hear all of that, but then she's not so much "doing her own thing" as tagging along Earn in hopes of getting his attention, and then obviously ignoring him when he does give her his attention. I guess she has her own logic going on :yeshrug:

Women do that shyt all the time lol.

I said when “White Fashion” came out that she was playing “hard to get” because when she was open with Earn SHE was chasing him and now in Europe HE was finally chasing her and she was enjoying it.

It also ties into her mental state and how she felt “trapped” by the lack of progress and success that her life in Atlanta represented. Earn in a way, represents the failures of her past but being around him and experiencing firsthand his success also represents hope for the future. If Earn can succeed then so can she

Facts, didn't want to put it that way but seems to be the "logic" of a lot of them lol
