I don’t think Earn would lie to Alfred about who owns the Masters. I’d LOVE to see how he negotiated that deal though, especially if Paperboi was a relatively newer artist when they signed it.
Nah this is the same ol Ern from season one & two. He’s been lying and finessing this whole season. The only difference is the consequences haven’t been hitting those around him in the same way as they have before. Now we have a reason as to why.

Its funny because a few years ago Donald Glover got into legal disputes with his former label Glassnotes Records over royalties, in which it was revealed that he does in fact own his Masters

Per the complaint: “In late 2017, the License Agreement expired. Shortly thereafter, Glover, apparently unsatisfied with the approximately $10 million in royalties already paid or due to him by Glassnote and the 45% of the public performance royalties from SoundExchange, took the position that he was entitled to the entirety of Glassnote’s 50% share of public performance royalties from SoundExchange — and that Glassnote was not entitled to any such royalty.”

Glassnote states that it had previously “enjoyed a productive and profitable creative and business relationship.” Glover owned his master recordings and allowed Glassnote exploitation rights. But things went south and hit bottom around June 28 when, according to the filing, Glover’s legal representatives demanded “a payment of $1.5 million as well as 100% of the ‘rights owner’ share of SoundExchange royalties on a moving forward basis.” The payment was due, per Glover’s team, on or before July 6.

When its come down to most things business related Earn has had Alfred’s back. Thats why Al retained his services in the season 2 finale instead of firing him. Because as he puts it Earn “gives a fukk” and has since the beginning. Earn wouldn’t straight up lie to Alfred about who owns the Masters, especially since that would be easy for Al himself to find out if he really wanted. Also this season has gone to great lengths to show that Earn has improved leaps and bounds as Alfred’s manager. This is definitely NOT the same Earn from seasons 1 & 2

Remember, this season’s theme is that of a “Black Fairy Tale”, meaning that it’ll more than likely end on a brighter note than season 2 did. Every episode outside of “Cancer Attack” ends with some sort of victory or morale boost for the main characters, so to tear all of that down with Earn screwing Al out of his Masters (the number ONE triumph for any recording artist) would be counterproductive to the season’s stated thesis.
