Note: I haven't listened to the leak yet.

Am I, like, the only guy that gets a cloying, less aggressive, less stupid post-Sleigh Bells vibe from Purity Ring (This is not a good thing)? It's better produced and not nearly as loud, but in the way that they write and construct songs, the general aesthetic is pretty similar to me.

It sounds deeply mediocre to me. I'll give the album a listen and come back with a more fully formed opinion.

Alright, the Purity Ring album:

Less mediocre than I thought, the singles work better in the album context, the panning tricks and the like grate VERY quickly, and I'm not sure I like the marriage of vocal delivery and lyrics so much. It just comes off as a trite attempt at depth.

It's better than Sleigh Bells (though 95% of all bands that exist are better than Sleigh Bells), but that doesn't actually make it good or revolutionary. It might grow on me, it probably won't. It's just kind of mediocre to me :manny:.

:aicmon: You didn't even really give Idler Wheel a fair shot, man. Actually listen to the album in full. Examine it. There's a lot of depth to its use of sparse arrangements, percussion and found sound that does a lot for that record. It's a complex, subtle album that actually demands the attention of the listener not only for the affect of Fiona's voice and lyrics, but for the intricate contrast between instrumentation and negative space. It's damn near brilliant, in my opinion.

And Sleigh Bells are literally just about the worst thing to come out of the Indie revival. That's 11 years of music I'm talking about here. Mindless, pointlessly loud, horribly produced garbage with not a hint of musicianship or depth to it. It's oppressive in the worst possible way. 3 or 4 songs on that debut could have been easily been Worst Song of the Year individually. Just dumb, dumb, dumb music.

(The Purity Ring album isn't growing on me. Union of lyrics and vocals are too gimmicky and the compositions, with all of its clutter and studio trickery, aren't doing anything at all for me. There are 2 or 3 elements in seemingly every song that I could just remove completely, as they just seem to be there to make the song pointlessly "complex." There's potential here, but it won't be realized until they learn to at least let the arrangements breathe.)

:comeon:

Where did I say Sleight were some musical savants. They are top tier drunk off your ass play it loud while sniffing coke off of bytches titties type music. As far as that Fiona Apple...I listen to a shytload of music I damn near have like 300 gigs of shyt on my HD covering everything except country. I like Mazzy Star, I like Mojave, I like Verspertine, pretty much what I'm trying to say is I can resonate with the downtempo chill introspective stuff. This Fiona record though :what: just seems to be another one of those critical darling albums thats so "deep" and beautiful in its minimalistic and drab nature but is really just boring as shyt. Reminds of That hoe Joanna Newsom lame ass.

:why: Why are you acting like I'm personally insulting you or something? I'm not trying to say YOU'RE less cultured or whatever because you listen to Sleigh Bells, I'm just saying that they're extremely stupid music. So dumb and talentless as to fail even on the low level that you put them on, in fact. But that's on them. If you enjoy it, whatever, plenty of my friends enjoy shyt I don't like. It's not that serious.

As for the other points:

1). I stand by what I said about the Fiona Apple album. You don't like that type of music, fine. But there's a difference between giving something a legit chance to win you over, it failing to do so and criticizing it on that level, and just relying on bias for criticism and acting like you've done the first. Getting three songs into an album and promptly dismissing it is not good criticism, nor is it really giving an album a chance. If you gave it a few spins, then promptly called it boring, that's fine. If you didn't listen to it, and said that you just dislike that type of music on its face, I can take that (I do this with Indie Folk all the time. The last exception was pretty much the first Fleet Foxes album). But, in my opinion, if you listen to the album, actually listen to the whole thing before dismissing it. It's the honest thing to do.

2). Seriously, I'm not insulting your music taste. Just your method of criticism. You don't have anything to prove to me.

3). Joanna Newsom would be 20x better to me if she'd stop singling entirely. Great harpist, good songwriter, occasionally overreaches on her concepts (Not nearly as much as, say, Dave Longstreth), voice sounds like a seal being clubbed to death with a bag of quarters. Just impossible to listen to. So I guess we can have SOME common ground there.

4). Shiina Ringo and Tokyo Jihen are too typical J-Rock for me. They're a cut above those types of bands, yes, but it just sounds too glossy and bombastic for me. If we're in the act of comparing musicians with exactly one similarity between them (Like PJ, I have no idea why you're comparing Shiina Ringo to Fiona or Joanna Newsom), then give me World's End Girlfriend over Tokyo Jihen.

The Lie Lay Land is so damn beautiful...thanks for reminding me.

Anyway, this is going nowhere. We have our preferences, whatever. E-Truce?
