Also certain distinction need to be made to have this discussion.

There's the freestyling every few bars type of lunch in

There's punching in for stylistic reasons ex. The way Beanie Sigel would overlap his bars, starting the new bar as the previous was finishing

Then there's the construct the verse in your head, then go rap it style

Marvin Gaye would mumble melodies into the mic until he came up with something, that's technically punching in. You know who else records like this? Young Thug:manny:

So this is a good topic, but how objective are nikkas willing to be?:russ:
The overlaps are not punch ins.. they're different tracks... like how jay did 99 problems.. Punch ins deletes or overwrites on the same track.

mumbling in the mic to record the melody and how you want to write and sing it i not punching in.. writers keep those mumbles, play it back and write to it

Yes it takes more time. But I think what people are missing in this thread is the evolution of attention spans and shyt like that. The newer generation came up in a different world than us, where shyt like reading books or writing lyrics gonna be damn near foreign to them. Everything is more instant for them and they attention spans are WAY shorter than ours at the same ages. So something as simple as sitting down, listing to a beat over and over while you craft a song is dumb as hell to them.

Half of these younger rapper will not even listen to beats unless they in the studio. I’m actually around some of these nikkas and know exactly how they think. One rapper told me, they can listen to beats before the studio but it don’t make sense, cause they have to be in the moment to decide what to record. This is not efficient at all because now they in the studio listening to beats for over an hour instead of having at least the beats ready. But this is the norm now

I see that even in people like maybe 5 years younger, so about 32. They struggle to pay attention to ANYTHING for more than 30 seconds to a minute.

forget reading book, they can't read articles, can't even finish long text messages, conversationally tend to jump around a lot, unable to keep even a few minutes focus on one thing.

But in the long run, doesn't that take more time? it may appear to be faster since everything is happening in the same space but it might technically be more time consuming. If they put the drugs and alcohol down during the session, they might realize that
Not necessarily a 1:1 comparison. It's all training and repetition

Think about it this way. The average person can't rapidly multiply large numbers in their head, but this is a very trainable skill. Writing in your head is the same thing

Jay gives great insight into his method through stories over the years. He said he would meet up with Jaz-O in the morning and sit at the table and rap all day. This is not trivial and has a large effect on brain plasticity

Listen to him talking about having no pen or paper and memorizing bars. Then consider the amount of passion he has for the craft. It's very reasonable to assume that Jay has rhymes floating and connecting in his head all day. Extrapolate this to 10/20/30 years

So when nikkas have these stories of Jay dropping a verse in one take after hearing the beat for 2 minutes it's not hard to believe based on his system and compounding repetition

the producer, mixer/engineer, marketing team deserve all the flowers. With the right team ANYONE can make a halfway decent song.

King von was constructing storytelling raps. So is tee grizzly. Tee grizzly making theme albums.

this didnt really start with Jay and Biggie... They just the only who advertised it.... Back in the late 80s early 90s we had to memorize our stuff and do one takes because studio time wasnt cheap. Kwame did the boy genius doing like 3-4 songs per 2hr session

This actually is 1 of the dumbest takes to be championed in hip-hop.

If you're In recording music or have anything remotely close to being involved in it you would laugh at this shyt. You're supposed 2 come to the studio ready 2 go.

You shouldn't have to read music or lyrics.

I don't know how having a sliver of professionalism became this huge nod.

Isn’t this what Wayne did? That’s why all that he doesn’t write his shyt wasn’t impressive to me
Some people have said he will smoke a blunt and look half asleep then wake up 30 minutes later and drop a verse in one take :merchant:

First pro headlining draw tip.

The reason you write your rhymes.

Is you can simply review said work, after it is prepared.
Meaning you can always go back and read your old rhymes. To see if you improved or regressed. Or let patterns fall by the way side unknowingly.
By writing your rhymes.

You can go back to different eras and re-incorporate old patterns and practices to remain as sharp and grow day to day. Not just whenever.
