I'm not sure when "The What" was done in the recording timeline, but Meth has said several times Biggie wrote his rhymes down for that

yeah … ‘the what’ was one of the early songs off R2D
but like i said the last few tracks off R2D - he completely stop using paper , see the premo link i posted

Jay isn't punching in. He's comping.

People who know how to record don’t punch-in a million times. No engineer worth their check is going to tell you that's going to sound good. Wayne is comping too. You're doing the verses over a few times until you get one that works for you, and you go with the best performance. You don’t piece together a bunch of punches and pray they sound natural. That's what the amateurs do. Look at the dudes featured in the video. All trash. Because they're not actual MC's. They don’t even know how to sit and structure on paper. So they're not able to memorize like Wayne and Jay do when they come up with whole verses in their head.

This is a lazy generation. And that's why the quality of the music is so garbage with these dudes. They ain't willing to actually invest in the craft, and that's why their music sounds the way it does. Technology won't cover up for trash ass music.

Stop giving passes.

Wayne and Jay both flodge and used/uses ghostwriters.

Which negate being a real emcee.
Then using ghosts and punches.
Totally disqualifies them as skilled emcees. They are voice over artist like Pixar.
All those wack emcees with no real skill are Pixar. Or similar to what a female voice over rapper does.

None of what they do or do is real.

It is the work of a culture thief slash loan dodger.

Reason I always thought he was one of the weaker members

Emceeing used to be just as much about shyt like breath control, mic/stage presence, and your ability to manipulate or play with your flow which is why some rappers didn’t mind spitting the same rhyme in a radio freestyle because they never did it the same way twice

All this shyt started with Jay and Biggie coming in the studio with memorized pre writtens or ghost writtens frontin like they’re Rainman

There is nothing wrong with writing down your raps then memorizing them before you go in the booth.

Most rappers used to do it that way that’s why they used to flow so much smoother
this didnt really start with Jay and Biggie... They just the only who advertised it.... Back in the late 80s early 90s we had to memorize our stuff and do one takes because studio time wasnt cheap. Kwame did the boy genius doing like 3-4 songs per 2hr session
