The Knicks are the first NBA team to be valued at $4 billion! (according to Forbes) :whew:

Top 10 Most Valuable Franchises (Forbes, 2019)

1. Dallas Cowboys ($5 billion)

2. New York Yankees ($4.6 billion)

3. Real Madrid ($4.24 billion)

4. FC Barcelona ($4.02 billion)

5. New York Knicks ($4 billion)

6. Manchester United ($3.81 billion)

7. New England Patriots ($3.8 billion)

8. Los Angeles Lakers ($3.7 billion)

9. Golden State Warriors ($3.5 billion)

t-10. Los Angeles Dodgers ($3.3 billion)

t-10. New York Giants ($3.3 billion)

3 out of the 4 teams I support are in the top 10 most valuable :whoo:.

A 17-win team is more valuable than 2 teams that are recent dynasties (Patriots & Warriors). Crazy world we live in :wow:.

Well, then why isn't every major professional team from NYC in the top 10? It's not just about location. Other factors play into a team's value.

If location was the only reason, then Manchester United, the Patriots and the Warriors wouldn't be in the top 10. All of those cities (Manchester, Foxborough/Boston & San Francisco/Oakland) have less than a million people.

It's definitely not the only factor but when you've got the most popular NYC team from the three top viewed sports in America all landing in the top 10 (2 in the top 5) in spite of 2 of those teams being terrible the past few years plus all three of those teams having competition from other NYC teams in their own sport that it's definitely a variable with outsized impact (brand > location >>> success imo).

Exactly.

The Giants and Yankees brand is what contributes greatly to their ranking. Them being in NYC greatly helps and both teams have been successful in their respective leagues.

The Yankees are a global brand. People know of the Yankees around the world, even if they don't watch or care about baseball. Then, of course, the Yankees have 27 WS titles.

The Giants are not a global brand (NFL is not a global league/sport) but their core supporters come from 3 states (New York, New Jersey & Connecticut). Also, the Giants have 4 SB titles, they are tied for 4th with the Packers.

The Knicks benefit more from playing in MSG than being in NYC itself. Also, the Knicks have a loyal fanbase with supporters from 3 states (NY, NJ & CT).

The Jets, Nets and Mets won't ever come close to the evaluation of the Giants, Knicks, and Yankees.

It’s probably a combination of the accessibility of MSG and the fact that the city is a basketball town.
