Well hopefully this can get the ball rolling on constitutional challenges to the Act so we can put implement some kind of parameters on this carte blanche surveillance. Congress has proven time and time again that they are completely incapable of doing anything

:heh: Ya right, the whole point of Congress is to keep us and the world in check.

Which is more or less my point. While there are members in the House and some in the Senate that opposed the recent renewal of Patriot Act on grounds that it infringes on our civil liberties, the numbers simply aren't there. Remember for whatever reason we need 60 votes to clear anything in the Senate. Plus you can already see Congressional members on both sides of the aisle getting in their defensive positions in order to justify their vote.

Which is why the judiciary may be the best shot at judging the overall constitutionality of various provisions in the Act. Unless they fast track any challenges, that could take years though :manny:

With current tech, it's either hackers stealing crap, corrupted officials/governments terrified of shadows, or getting cross-fired in the "spy vs. spy" game.

Watching "Enemy of the State" several days back (H-wood again), it reminded me that stuff like spying, covert operations, snitching, etc. on the public/private/exclusive sector has been going on for decades. We just have advanced tech pushing it along.

Yeah, there's extremist perverts, the less-informed, and/or power-hungry freaks (which you can encounter off the grid) messing around on computers and other toys. Either folks get on that collective and retake the "of, by, and for" government ideal (pipe dream, but still...) or continue into greed and fear along with paranoia.

@K.O.D notice how certain posters would rather talk about theatrics in africa then stuff that is going on in their own country.

Matt Taibbi and Naomi Wolf are up there as well.

Taibbi goes right for the source. He's like Freeman from the Wire, he doesn't really care about the criminals at the bottom and the mid levels, he wants to follow the money trail to the bosses.
