well I sort of agree, why only in baseball do we hype up the old players like that? Nobody thinks a dunk from the 60s is better than a Vince Carter dunk.

But Im not even shytting on Mayes he was a legit great and so is the catch but a lot of people, well a lot of the old baseball writers who are ass backwards, still consider this number one all time, Im sorry its far from it.

Why is baseball the only sport stuck in the past?

it's not stuck in the past. it's just never needed to evolve to adapt to fans' and players' tastes like football and basketball. it's a testament to the difficulty and joyful absurdity of baseball.

it's got an orthodox tone to it. the way to play it beautifully was figured out almost 100 years ago, but the ability to actually do it is rare.

this is neither negative nor positive, btw. it's not a defense of the game. people use this reason as basis for both hating and loving the game.

this same logic is why we dont embrace sabermetrics, why we care about PEDs

PED's are cared about in every sport for competitive and health reasons.

As for sabermetrics, there's a generation gap there, but I can understand why people hate sabermetrics and why people love them.

Because baseball is that deep into the fabric of America.... it's some truly American shyt.

Nobody thinks a dunk from the 60's is better than a VC dunk for a few reasons.

- Cats were not dunking like that in the 60's
- Athletes from the late 90-00's any athlete from the 60's

Baseball isn't stuck in the past... the nature of the game never dictated for it to innovate and evolve like basketball and football did.

a football game from 1960 looks nothing like a football game from 2012.

but in the 1960's baseball was about the same as it is today.

what was great about mays' catch was that not only did he make the catch, but he had the presense of mind to get the ball back in to infield and keeping the runners out of scoring position. most of the catches nowadays, while they look better, they usually occurr with the bases empty and very rarely do spectacular catches keep teams from scoring or out of scoring position.

Yeah catches where you went nearly 430 ft to catch it and be able to throw it back in and hold the runners all while in the WS loses luster

You're a horrible poster.

:damn:

The fact that the batter even hit it that far is fukking ridiculous too. People gotta research how HUGE that field was and fields were before the steroid/juice ball era when questioning that catch. Today there's parks that are barely scraping 400' at the wall
