The insurgency exposed them. IEDs, VBIEDs, claymore mines, ambushes, Nation building exposed them. The US military can defeat a conventional enemy however when it comes to guerilla warfare and insurgents they fail. Same with Afghanistan. We have been there for 16 years and the Taliban is on the resurgence. This is the limits of primacy. The only reason why ISIS which was called AQI back then was almost defeated was because they paid sunni warlords to turn against them. Then the money dried up and Maliki came to power and shyt went south. Once we left ISIS began to either killed or recruit these sunni tribal warlords to fight the shia govt in Baghdad. In the end, the insurgency was a fiasco. They were facing both a shia insurgency(Mahdi Army/Kaitaib Hezbollah) and a sunni one. Also with regards to Iraq there was a reason why the US didn't even attempt to disarm the shia militias because they had ties to Iran, and that it would have open a hornet's nest of problems if they tried that. The Iraq war showed that with all the advanced technology in the world defeating an insurgency is difficult and takes alot of blood and treasure.
So we are great at winning the battle.... but shyt at winning the war
