This was a laughably bad movie, with some very dope set designs, fashion, and beautiful shots, you can see the fashion influence of course, also a strong Amy Adams performance. Jake does what he can with a horribly written caricature, in increasingly preposterous situations. It reminds me of Refn's latest works, beautiful and hollow, but Refn still has an edge and a humor in his work, that eludes Ford here. A more horror type satire like 'The Neon Demon' would be perfect for him. That last sequence with Amy Adams is the movies best, fittingly it plays like a Dior ad or something, but there was great music, great acting, great set design and sequencing.

:deadmanny: Amy Adams at dropping the book after every chapter "oh the horror"

:laff: at most of the lines "Why do you associate yourself with that man....who kills people"? Jake: "You kill people"

The beyond cliched sequences of Jake Gllyenhall in a cowboy esque outfit every scene in New York, "You have to fight for your love".

The unexplained scene of her at the abortion clinic, where Jake appears for no real reason, other then a dramatic reveal.
Finally, somebody else saw what I saw.

Not to mention Michael Shannon chewing the scenery in a hamfisted performance, I understand it was a novel we were 'reading' with the character, which means it lacked urgency, or importance, nor was it believable on it's own terms. That book must been a fukking debacle too. So many of those scenes were just parody level bad.....chewing tobacco and shyt :laff: the telegraphed 'cancer' reveal, when he was hacking his lungs out. Neither Ford, nor the author of the fictional story have any idea about police procedure and homicide cases. Imagine a detective saying the shyt Shannon was saying to Jake, "He hit her once or twice with a bat.....so it wasn't that bad.....They were also both raped"

In all honesty, I thought there was a mildly interesting movie to be had, without the novels narrative, needed a little occult, serial killer, and you could have had a 'Neon Demon' companion, shot like a Yves St Laurent commercial. I like fashion, I wear a little Tom Ford, but there's no excuse for this level of absurdity and bad lines, he doesn't get a pass. I need to find a copy of the script, and really start posting the worst lines, it was one after another. It's hard to write dialouge, but this was unacceptable. The scenes on the side of the road, had some tension, but rarely was believable enough to really get under your skin. Those people were clearly acting like deranged hillbillies, it wasn't authentic.

:deadmanny: at the rapist/electrician/plumber/loser in West Texas having the defined and sculpted stomach of a male model.

One of the best films of 2016

I fukking HATE Amy Adams but she was really good in this...

The first 35 minutes is supposed to be really jarring but I was just like :ehh:...then again I lived a pretty fukked up life until my mid 20's so I'm generally :ehh: at most things that are supposed to be fukked up in movies...

One of my favorite films of the year.

But I will say I'm predisposed to liking this film since I also write novels. Like I have literally had the "so how do you like it?" arguement with my girlfriend. I feel like most writers can relate to that scene and the ones surrounding it that talk about writing. Hell I even relate to the wish fulfillment of inserting fparts of yourself and other people you know into stories, and hurting them to help get over your own crap. I thought it was so dope how the wife in the novel looks like Amy Adams, but not exactly. That's generally how I write my fictional characters. Very closely based on actual people I know.

I can see how this film would be divisive but I don't give a shyt about the criticisms I have read in here. The film worked for me and gave me more tension and uncomfortable feelings than nearly anything else I've seen this year.

On another note, this film could truly be argued to be misogynistic as fukk.
