The Xbox One is why they failed. The leadership in place now wasn’t who guided that direction of the company at that time. From the company CEO on down they’re different now.

The back half of the 360 was already shaky.

The market wants one thing. They don’t want to have to pick and chose. The market wants one streaming service like Netflix used to be that has everything. They don’t want to have to sub to 10 services to get it all.

don't necessarily disagree, but unless you gonna have Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony games on this service, it's gonna fail. the price will already be too high to carry all 3. Some businesses are not meant for streaming. All these streaming and sub services are learning the hardway. And now you got people cutting the streaming cord because it's gotten out of hand.
Even Nintendo with their quality software could never compare to what Sony became after the N64 cartridge debacle. It wasn’t until they stopped trying to compete with Sony at all and went their own way that they found success again. Nintendo used to be the defacto choice for mainstream console gaming. They aren’t that and will likely never be that again.

Agree, and who's fault was that in that situation? Nintendo's.
Unless Sony fukks up what you’re talking about is virtually impossible. Customers aren’t going to abandon the market leader for a similar product unless given a reason by that leader to leave.

100% so it's over for them as a hardware provider. The numbers are showing this. People in MS leadership already contradicting Phil. You not getting over 75 billion for "free" without some kind of ROI. He sold them on increased gamepass subs. That's not happening. Console numbers are tracking worse than the XB1. There's nothing that is going to magically change things. They might get out of the hardware business after THIS gen, not even next gen at this point.

Not sure why people keep bringing this up when folks were abandoning the PS3 for 360 in droves. It can be done. It's just a situation where M$ shyt the bed with the Xbox One.

Game Pass was Spencer. PC as an equal platform with day one releases was Spencer.

Nadella is not a gamer and wasn’t into video games. If he decides to move on from Xbox nobody would have stopped him. Hell the shareholders would have welcomed it.

You look at the moves made and say oh that’s obvious now but those were dark times and Xbox was most certainly on the chopping block. Spencer convinced Nadella it was worth saving.

He gets credit for that.
Microsoft wasn't heavily rumored to be moving any of their studios when Nadella took over for Ballmer. Yes, the chatter is that he's not a gamer. We get it. We all know it. But even if Nadella moved on from "Xbox," that doesn't mean that they wouldn't have pivoted with what they already own into games-as-a-service.

Now explain how Spencer has set up Xbox consoles, which he clearly cares about, to be more successful going forward outside of "he acquired some devs and publishers." It's clear that he's failed the console division specifically so badly that Nadella's going to pivot all those acquisitions to games-as-a-service.

It isn't all or nothing. Microsoft can exist in the console space and not achieve dominance just like they make the Surface and don't dominate the Windows PC market or tablet market. Just like Google makes the Pixel phone and doesn't dominate Android phones.

I think there's a lot of wishful thinking by PlayStation fans that pesky Microsoft would just get out of the paint. I think the best reality for them is treating other platforms how Sony treats PC. It comes to our platform first and after a while on a case by case basis they explore releases elsewhere.

When they decide to make a HI Fi Rush 2 then release the prior game on PlayStation and Switch. 2 comes out on Xbox, PC, and Game Pass.

Not at all. They can turn third party publisher (the inevitable is in our face) and still be fine.

We just tired of their delusional bozo Stans and trash hardware:camby:

The Xbox One was such an epic bag fumble it's insane

The 360 was a great console with lots of games, unique features and exclusive titles. They completely diarrhea shat the bed after that

I don't think MS will exist console gaming altogether but they will be comfy in third place for a long time. Especially with Switch 2 on the horizon

At this point why do they need to do that though? For the time being they can keep releasing hardware and have it as a product in their portfolio and in some cases release multiplatform games and in others keep them exclusive on their hardware.

I don't think Microsoft will ever really turn 3rd party the way yall think they will and stop making hardware. At some point when the tech reaches advanced enough levels they'll abandon hardware because it won't make sense for anyone to continue making proprietary boxes anymore not because they can't outsell PlayStation. Microsoft's real platform is Game Pass and that is something that can exist past a console.

Series hardware is tracking WORSE than the X1. Gamepass subs have stalled.

Go full third party or it's gonna continue to get worse

Absolute terrible takes by the stans
It's a terrible take to say that the console market peaked a while ago and Microsoft is laying the brickwork to transition away from it not on some console war stan shyt but because the potential isn't there for growth like they want.

I mean they can grow their console business as it is now but there's a ceiling to it. You know a business model is hitting it's limitations when you see the major players in it start jacking up prices and giving nothing for it. When companies see growth potential they lower prices and keep them lower. When the growth slows since they're not adding net new customers they start charging the ones they have more.

We got extra long console generations full of software and service price increases, remasters, remakes, console mid gen refreshes, no real consistent price drops on hardware outside of a holiday sale maybe and most of this stuff is designed to get the same customers to double and triple dip not expand the market.

ms transitioning away from consoles citing of a lack of growth while consistently having the smallest market share is like a passport bro saying he's going to thailand because he needs more options available than just american women.
