How did this happen? :jbhmm:

I thought the Hoteps were all about knowledge of self and autonomy in our communities? Harlem was the epicenter of this rhetoric yet STILL ended up getting gentrified. :patrice:

The World, but from BK
West Harlem has been more gentrified than East Harlem. Harlem also has A LOT of Latinos. I actually think latinos started out numbering blacks out there. Ima be real though- Harlem wasn't in the greatest condition back in the days. West Harlem got a face lift and it came at a price. Building apts get gut renovated which lead to increasing in rent. If the people already in these building can't afford the rent hikes because of the improvements. Then landlords seek people who can afford it.

I see nothing wrong with this. Any Black people owning property there will benefit whether directly by selling or renting, or indirectly by increased market values. The only people who are hurting are those who weren't owning property in the first place. This collectively brings up everyone's market value.

Isn't the main problem that blacks were dumped into these 'ghettos' in the first placed and ostracized from the rest of the mainstream community? Or is it now that we just wanted exclusivity and can't stand it when other people come into where we originally thought of as our own, regardless of how derelict and crime-ridden we had kept it.
Whites and other ethnicities with money moving into these areas and improving the property value and overall area only helps fellow blacks who are also community minded and want to improve their own standing. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

Actually most Black property owners either sold a long time ago, are being bought out now. As well as just not being able to play in this inflated real estate game. Unless you have 10-15 million dollars liquid, you can't play the property game for real in the 5 boroughs.
