Wild stuff from Dexter Filkins in The New Yorker about the U.S. military's abysmal recruiting situation. Some fascinating insights into how ill-prepared America is for a confrontation w/ China. Spoiler: offshoring your country's industrial base has, erm, drawbacks. The U.S. Military’s Recruiting Crisis There's great demographic details in this story. It's hard to walk away from this article feeling like the US military lives up to the myths it tells about itself. Also, while DEI initiatives seem sweepingly unpopular among troops, surprise! it's other, typically material concerns that matter most.

@kevinrothrock veteran here; not surprising the recruitment situation is awful. So many unforced errors between cancer from burn pits, series of unnecessary wars, and insane statistics in sexual harassment. I would have a hard time encouraging my kids to join even if I thought they would most likely have a net positive experience as I did.

@ogi The job security sounds nice, though.

@kevinrothrock hah, certainly is! I separated to go to college but something about retiring at 38 sure seems enticing

Major case squad
Navy??

70k to 184k based on your rank

Navy telling :duck:

E1 starting out at 70K a year :wtf:

I mean with that starting pay and todays economy I’d think every 18 year old would be running to the military cause we surely wasn’t getting it like that when I served 2002-2006.

Going into military service ain't for everyone, but it 100 percent can give u a headstart. I went straight in after high school did 8 yrs was out by the age of 26. Was able to afford to stay in beautiful San Diego after my EAS, got paid to go to school, was clearing about 3gs a month in 2005 -06 just off the new G.I bill, plus another 12k a year for life because I had foot surgery and it left a scar. Bought a house with no money down due to my VA loan. That house is worth damn near a million dollars right now and I bought for 200k in 2011. I'm a strong advocate for the military and not on no "I love the USA" shyt, the Military broke a cycle for me and my family. It provided all the resources to make me who I am today.

Those numbers are adjusted. For example, an employer could say they are paying someone $50 hr when factoring in taxes, health benefits, retirement contribution etc. That is what the employer is paying but the employee will only see around $35 hr. Stil, if an E-1 was going paid $70k in the military.......that's straight ballin.

Sitting on your ass watching other people play video games and having sista girl talk hour is more enticing than doing something with your life unfortunately

Smfh
If I was 18 in this economy I would do it

I did my 20 in the army

fukk sitting around flipping burgers 🍔 or trying to be a scammer

I can see all the benefits of going to military in one's position but being great is more important than a govt gimmie.

I went to a navy recruiter in Long Beach in 2012 was on my ass after college and thought fukk it as this bytch I was fukking suggested it cause her grandpa chilling and she said it’s a good career..

Took the asvab, got a good score, recruiter was happy as hell thought he had one..took that on the spot piss test at the next meeting and FAILED..he was sick because at that time it was automatic disqualification for weed but he kept telling me to come back in 6 months and he can get me in if I piss clean…I chose weed never went back lol

Best decision because I knew myself and knew I would have gotten kicked out for failing a random piss test…

They change stance on weed they would have no issues filling seats
Damn
