I'm new to all this and confused on how this works. Isn't Okada the champion? How can he be in it if it's an event to determine the #1 contender? Unless he's guaranteed to lose and is just there to add intrigue or may win and drop the title later? :ohhh: Feels like the wwe champion participating in the royal rumble or mitb match.

Edit: I guess I see the part where the champion picks their opponent if he wins. shyt sounded confusing with the champion in it. :russ:

Kayfabe wise the champion is in because he wants to show he's the best.

In 95' Mutoh won his first G-1 as the IWGP champ, Sasaki won it too. Both times it was a setup for them eventually losing the belt (in Sasaki's case, vacating) in a big interpromotional feud, so it served a purpose to have them "dominate" like that.

But normally, the G-1 is a great way of creating new challengers. Even if they don't win the whole thing, whoever pins the champ will eventually get a title shot or at the very least a new rivalry will be created.

Nowadays it's a little bit different because the G-1 winner gets a MITB/Royal Rumble type of title shot at January 4th so having the champ win would be a little anti-climatic.

Somebody explain it to me....

What's Goto missing? Is he really just missing that intangible X-Factor?

Like.... I feel like evil samurai lord Goto would be entertaining as hell....

The only thing Goto ever missed was an opportunity. Dude had legit chances of getting the main belt and be the main guy in 07', 09', 10' and 11' but they never pulled the trigger on him - mostly because they were content with Nakamura and Tanahashi as their top guys, so they kept delaying his ultimate push - and eventually it was just too late.

He got burned as a legit main guy after so many stop and go pushes and teases of him actually winning the belt. He's pretty much lost all credibility as a main title holder. If he ever wins it will probably be a transition reign or even a "thank you" title win like they did with Nakanishi.

It's a shame because dude is pretty good, but if you've been following the product for a while he's just too damn damaged to be taken as a serious threat. Kayfabe wise he's Dolph Ziggler status (without ever winning the main title) :francis:

It's sad.

It's like you got the Big 4 at any given time....

Goto is a permanent Number 5.

I mean, look at his match with Omega.

He's booked as "just not good enough"
