I thought that when he came in, but dude has more fans than I could ever expect, and his quirky style and name are actually celebrated.

It's working for him now...ride it out, and when he takes that next step, new attire may help ferment the change.

Exactly. And Makabe's run was in the middle of the renaissance of New Japan. He ended up having a more impactful career than Goto, He got to lead his own stable and have a pretty big run for almost 3 years. That's better than almost anyone in the last decade for the company.

The fact that Sanada didn't came out of the Dojo and worked years in All Japan makes it almost impossible for him to be an Ace. He could be a champion and mainevent, but he's not gonna be THE guy in NJPW.
