All this catch and release BS is leading to the crime surge

i seriously want to know how does it benefit society if someone commits a crime and since they don’t have the means to bail out, they’re released.

Vs if they do have the means to bail out and commit crime :unimpressed:

Just say you want all 'criminals' (and I use this in quotes cause I don't assume just cause your arrested your automatically guilty or automatically a criminal) to be held in jail until proven innocent and call it a day:martin:

how are the two things related? so people who are arrested for violent crimes are being let go " only keeping those accused of a crime in jail if they were deemed a threat"? so people are who aren't deemed a threat are then getting release and becoming a threat? what if that same person could afford bail, would they then decide to not be a threat?

Above the fray.
@ogc163
Thanks.

Here is a timeline of the most recent actions involving the issue of BAIL by NY STATE Legislature

Bail reform measures, signed April 2019, enacted Jan 2020

Amendments to bail reform measures Signed April 2020 enacted July 2020

==========================
Summary of the Amendments
Bail Reform Amendments

Bail Reform Amendments

S.7506-B/A. 9506-B (Part UU)

Increases the list of potential conditions under which an arrestee may be released under non-monetary conditions, to include: refrain from contact with certain people; mandatory programming; obey an Order of Protection; obey other conditions set by court relating to the safety of a victim of a family offense. Requires the chief administrator of the courts, in conjunction with DCJS, to collect detailed data and report regarding pretrial release and detention.

Signed: April 3, 2020 Chapter 56 – Budget Bill: Part UU
Effective: July 2, 2020.
Amends: Multiple sections of the Criminal Procedure Law; §216 of the Judiciary Law, by adding a new subdivision 5; and Executive Law by adding a new section 873-u.

==================================
Those are the facts, here is the opinion/commentary

The same NY State Senate that voted in bail reform measures, added amendments to them less than four months after they'd been enacted. I'm certain that they were lobbied by the same interests that pushed for the reforms, as well as from law enforcement depts across the state. In the end, the amendments were added and passed.

1)To what would you attribute the amendments being added, and the expansion of bailable offenses and the tightening of conditions for no bail releases?

Random people on the internet disagreeing on the topic is one thing, but these are Assemblymen and State Senators

They aren't. It's just plays into the perception that the less fortunate are more of threat to society while further propping up a two tiered justice system.

@CrimsonTider

Catch and Release is what people do to fish, not people / citizens of a country.
But, the STATE of New York amending bail reform measures within four months of them going into effect, seems to support your earlier point.
Mayor Adams is going to get interference and pushback against his call to walk back the measures back even more, though. Primarily because the first set of amendments seemed to address loopholes and gaps, and the public safety concerns they may have caused.

As Ive said before, any type of reform is a work in progress. If lawmakers have learned anything the past few years, it's that being hard on crime and being smart on crime are not the same thing.
Practical changes have to made that protects the rights of the accused, but also protects public safety. Adjustments then have to be made accordingly.

This here is facts

you got people in this thread denying the existence of crime and posting tweets from professors that they can’t even articulate

Ask anyone dealing with crime or threatening by it Daily. The real criminals are getting slaps on the wrist

1. Point to posters denying the existence of crimes.

2. What specific parts of the tweets do you take issue with?

One thing we've seen here in Houston is criminals getting out on bail and "fundraising" to get other people out by way of new crimes.
