I hope that's a rumor because that'd be completely stupid if they made a 3DS successor that suddenly meant games would get split again across both platforms.

Nintendo to announce titles, specs, region-locking status in 2017
Nintendoconfirmed with video game news website Famitsu on Friday that the Nintendo Switch, its newly unveiled hybrid home/handheld system, will not be compatible with Wii U game discs or Nintendo 3DS cards. The company elaborated that the NintendoSwitch is not designed to be the successor to either earlier system.
Nintendo Switch games will be on game cards as opposed to optical discs.
Nintendo also responded to a question about the NintendoSwitch's battery life, and promised it is developing a system that can be comfortably played in areas without electricity. Nintendowill announce more details at a later date.
The Wall Street Journalreporter Takashi Mochizukiadditionally reported over Twitter that Nintendo will have no more announcements regarding the Switch's game titles, spec details, and region-lock status in 2016.
Nintendo previously announced 48 publishers, developers and middleware partners who are supporting the system. The company is planning to announce a launch date, list of launch window titles, price, and other specifics prior to the hardware's March launch.
The system will offer a custom NVIDIA Tegra processor with an NVIDIA GPU, a high-definition display, detachable Joy-Con controllers, and a Nintendo Switch Dock for connecting the system to a television.
