The Nintendo DS sold 155 million. The 3DS is at like 40% of that. 60% of the total number of people that bought a DS did not buy a 3DS. That's a huge decline.

The Wii U sold like 13 million. People don't see Nintendo as a complement to the XB1/PS4.

I still don't see why Nintendo doesn't just go to Sony and strike a partnership. Sony can make the home console and Nintendo can do the portable and they can each put their games on both.

Yes they do, the "core gamers" you think they should go after, pretty much all acknowledge it as such.

Iwata even admitted to this in his interview with time magazine.

The comparatively weak response to the Wii U isn’t lost on Iwata. “Certainly I’m not satisfied with the current situation,” he says. “It may not be [people’s] first console of choice, but they recognize it as perhaps the best second console,” he adds.

Nintendo has stated time and time again (as recently as this year) that they are not trying to get into it with sony and xbox. They are carving out their own lane.

If this is the case with Nintendo systems being seen as complements then why were Wii U sales so low? Nintendo systems are not complements. They're the devices people are forced to buy to play Nintendo games on. It's reached a point where people's attitude has become if we have to buy your system just to play your games then the majority of us won't. The numbers back this. Every Nintendo system with the exception of the Wii sold less than the system before it.

Instead of carving out their own lane it looks to me like they're running from Sony and running from Microsoft and throwing shyt at a wall hoping it sticks with all these gimmick systems.

If you can't beat them join them. Since Nintendo doesn't want to compete with Sony what's the harm in making money with them? Breath of the Wild on PS4 would outsell whatever it will end up doing on the Wii U and NX combined.

Nintendo should have joined forces with Sony decades ago anyway.

But they would make less money. Since the game would cost more to make (being on the powerful PS4 platform) and they would have to give up a portion of the profits to Sony.

Nintendo has to do "gimmicks". If they made a traditional console like the PS4/XB1 they will do worse than Wii U numbers. They have to try something new.

Also using cartridges is actually a good idea. Cartridge technology has advanced to the point that they're superior to blurays/dvds/CDs. More capacity. Faster memory reads (minimal load times). Cheaper.

Roughly 10% goes to the Platform owner from what I read, so it wouldn't be anything crippling considering the substantial increase in revenue by doing so.

Selling 10 million multiplatform is greater than 3 million by yourself.
