Isn't the physical copy a empty cartridge? You still have to download the game. You're only paying the extra $10 just to be required to insert an empty cartridge to play a digital game.
It depends. Games like Mario Karty World and the new DK will be fully on the cartridge with the file size being:

  • Mario Kart World: 23.4 GB
  • Donkey Kong Bananza: 10.0 GB
Nintendo is great at usual for compression and optimization for file sizes. Though the empty cartridge will be more of a thing with 3rd party games.

It's simple what's he's trying to convey. A lot of people making noise online will gladly hand over $100 for games that come with early access or some simple dlc that really didn't really warrant the extra money while then pretending that $80 for a Mario Kart game is offensive. In reality this all comes down to perception of value. Some folks will see that 3 day early access as worth paying an extra $10 for while someone else will find that completely stupid. At the end of the day, people are just capping, 95% of people online who bytch about shyt will cave in anyway. It's no point in going back and forth with people over things like price because if you're going to buy the shyt anyway on some "Well it's really unlimited fun and plus my friends all playing it online." then congrats you played yourself.

In the case of Mario Kart World, it will be a title that will be heavily supported through the Switch 2's lifecycle. Hell fukking Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got extra content of all things. Which was so bizarre when that came out. You got these games with skin & DLC that basically feel like stuff that normally would be in the base game if they didn't think the DLC would sell.

Now, obviously, if someone ONLY plays single - player games, don't buy Mario Kart. You won't get your value from the $80 and if they offer a seasonal pass. Granted, Fear Of Missing Out is real like you said.

Mario Kart is a lot like Smash Bros, it is a staple party game at the very least.

The Kirby Switch 1 game & TOTK being priced at $80 is a much bigger issue for me then Mario Kart because they are fukking Switch 1 games. :snoop:

Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden said Nintendo can charge what it wants for new first-party Switch 2 games because Nintendo makes compelling games. Some people might perceive the price increase for a game like Mario Kart World ($80) as being "hefty," Layden said, but in the end, people will buy it anyway.

"If it's the only place where you can play Mario, then you get your wallet out and you buy into it... and Donkey Kong and Zelda. That first-party exclusivity kind of mitigates the sticker shock, if you will, of these price hikes, because you want that content so bad," he said (via IGN).

It's crazy that Nintendo is going to get away with this. Honestly, looking back a lot of Switch games gave me buyer's remorse because they were overhyped and rarely went on sale. At least their games have good resale value. I just hope Switch 2 games are better.
