I did this without even knowing anything about the advanced skill tree moves, no ninjitsu or magic

Get the kunai, mabishiki, poison bombs, the fire bombs. I don't know if you unlocked it yet but there's a ninjitsu skill that let's you retrieve arrows if they kill an enemy with a critical hit. Also there's one called quick change or something like that that revives with a bit of health when you die.

I haven't tried onmyo but cop the skills that let you put elemental damage on your weapons. You can get them from the start
