It's not rigged.
It's structured around narrative payoffs.
One team is guaranteed to achieve a result that the networks hyped for 7 days previous.
If the Patriots hadn't deferred and their return man took it to the house, the announcers could have just as easily started talking about how hard it was going to be for Buffalo to get up for this game, how the real victory was *show instagram post* Damar making this heart shape with his hands in the hospital, and, as they were getting throttled 38-7, how they'd be ready to play the Patriots again next week and win it for Damar.
Additionally, the narrative focus would have been able to shift to Mac Jones and the Patriots: how he responded in the biggest game of his life. on the road, in a super charged environment with everything stacked against him. How Belichick battled through adversity and got the big win when he needed it to secure a playoff spot and get in over McDaniel in the east, by beating the two front running teams in the division in back to back weeks. They'd be the scary 7 seed going into Cincinnati in a game that would open with a Cincy -4 line and suddenly the plucky upstart kids from New England have a chance to make some noise in the playoffs as the team no one wants to face.
It's not rigged.
It's just very well scripted.
And when the play on the field generates a payoff that everyone is rooting for, it feels rigged.
But you gotta understand: the payoff was only going to play out one way no matter HOW Buf scored.
If it had been 0-0 at the 13 minute mark of the 4th, and it was a total defensive slug fest, and the Bills pounded it in from the 1 with Singletary on their third trip into the redzone, Jim Nantz would have been crying then
"Was there any doubt Tony? There it is. Singletary on Buffalo's... get this... pardon me I'm a little choked up here.... but he scores on Buffalo's third, and likely final trip into the redzone. The only touchdown today that wins it for the Bills, but there can be no doubt. This one was for Damar. It almost feels like *says it at the same time as Romo* FATE. Yes it does Tony, yes it does."
