A team with a balanced offense with a lead can run the ball without having to worry about a defense stacking the line
If a defense does put 8 in the box the offense will audible to a play action and the receiver will have less men to beat in the secondary. That helps a running game tremendously, especially when you have a physical receiver and mismatch like irving or gates, and a great qb throwing to him.
bettis didnt have that advantage until ben was drafted and he only had two more years left. So teams were stacking the line without having to worry about the offense passing over their heads but still couldnt stop the Bus from moving the chains.
You seem to be under the impression that a team is obligated to run the ball in closing situations. But if you have a passing threat it keeps the defense from committing 100% to the run in these situations.
I cant believe I have to explain this to someone.
