New York State Has Lowest Black Male Graduation Rate in US | Dominion of New York

Yesterday when the Schott Foundation released its biennial report about the education of black and Latino males, the foundation’s president and CEO made a dire prediction. John H. Jackson told the AP that it would take 50 years for black males to close the national 26 percent high school graduation gap with white males. If he’s right, the timeline is much longer in New York State and New York City, which have among the worst high school graduation rates for black males in the country, according to the report.

In New York State, only 37 percent of black males graduated from high school during the 2009-10 school year, the report found. While that’s a 12 percent improvement over the 2007-08 school year, the improvement only closed the black-white graduation gap by 1 percent.

New York City’s track record of graduating black males is even worse. Only 28 percent finished high school that year, making the district the seventh worst in the nation. The Schott Foundation recorded no improvement in the graduation rate of NYC’s black males since the 2007-08 school year.

By comparison, the best performing districts in America — Newark, New Jersey and Montgomery County, Maryland — graduated black males at a rate of 74 percent. Why do you believe New York State and New York City perform so much more poorly than other states and districts?

Damn I didn't know it was that bad out here, but at the same time I can't say I'm that surprised.

Lil nikkaz don't give a fukk no more, and ain't nobody instilling values and discipline upon them. I go to my old junior high, and see students having no respect for the teachers, cursing them out and shyt. And the teachers are scared of them. Not only that, these lil nikkaz is big as fukk nowadays, I'm 5'11 and half these lil nikkaz taller than me.

When I attended that junior high in the late 90's the principal used to run that shyt like a damn near boot camp. Not only that, they had classes for advanced/gifted students. I only spent three years in high school because I took high school classes and regents exams in junior high 8th grade. Those programs have now been eliminated, principal replaced, and shyt seemed to have been going downhill ever since.

These no manners having children then go to high school and perpetuate the same f'd up culture and way of thinking that they bring from junior high school. Now they start getting wild tattoos, piercing, and the lil girls dressing like grown women or hoes. They all think they gon get to said league, or gonna be hustlers, models, etc. They all can't make it, those professions have limited seats. They don't have any real inspiration or guidance from people around them. shyt is sad brehs.

I mean, my generation used to be wild, and got shyt crackin when we had to, but at least we graduated or got GEDs at the end of the day.

Yeah the stats came out yesterday that something like 52% graduate in 4 years. Itdoesn't account for people who stay another year or get a GED but the numbers are very disturbing either way.

Personally, I think welfare state in NY is partially the cause of this.

I'm surprised Newark's is so high. I don't hear too many positive things about the city. Good job.

You want to see competition in materialism at it's fiercest? . . . Enter a hood NYC public high school. I'm talking $300 sweaters/shirts (pick a brand) with $300 jeans and $300 kicks, jewlery, cell phones and if the school is hood enough. . . Whips. Shyt, atleast that's how it was going down when I was in H.S. IT'S SATURATED WITH DISTRACTIONS. Bad culture all around.

Sounds about right. I remember when I was in HS most people gave not one fukk about school, grades, their future, etc.

And this is in NY where you can get like an 80 average, a part time, and financial aid will take care of most of the rest. SUNY schools are some of the best schools in the state. Hunter is a good school, hell even Brooklyn College is on the come up. And if you wanna live away from school you can go to Stonybrook, Albany, Syracuse, etc. Those schools were actually CHEAPER than where I went (Temple) they just did'nt have the major I wanted at the time.

And HS in the US let alone NYC is so fukking EASY. I slept walk through high school and got an 80 average. I mean I literally NEVER studied. All I did was the HW and it was like "Well whatever is on the HW is gonna be on the test so just know that shyt" and then boom passing classes. Never before in my life was the words "90% of success is showing up" more true.

We gotta do better with what we have so when we have more we can dominate...
