I didn't even bother reading the article, but to put a couple things out.

First, DO NOT put this as a "New York thing". This is a select group of people, just because it's in NY Magazine, doesn't mean that it's coming from NY. Secondly, if you entertain any type of sexual activities with the same sex, you are gay. Point blank period, their is no exceptions.

I would need to read the book (which I'm probably not going to do) before formulating a stance on this. The social norm reasoning isn't wrong though, by general measure, two girls 'experimenting' is less likely to be challenged than if two guys were to do the same. The whole 'prove that you aren't scared, and jump off' is another thing altogether.
