Practice report update from Gleitman:

1. “CJ Stroud is absolutely killing it. He looks fantastic so far. Momentum from last season rolled into off-season training and is rolling right into camp. Very optimistic he has the season everyone expects based on early returns.” There is nothing surprising there but great to hear.

2. “Way too early to have a true vibe but there is cautious optimism early in camp about the defense. Guys are flying around out there and playing with a little swagger. Lots more confidence in the D at this point in camp this year versus last year. Have done mostly base stuff so we’ll see what happens when they throw more at them.” Again nothing crazy but another great to hear. Same source was nervous about the D heading into last season so glad to hear them not feel that way this year.

From Gleitman:

Spoke to someone who would know about camp so far heading into tomorrow’s scrimmage. Here are some guys he feels have “stock up” so far early on in practices:

  • QB CJ Stroud: crushing it, that is all.
  • RB Miyan Williams and Evan Pryor: TreVeyon Henderson is going to have a big year but everyone is impressed with the jumps these guys have made and how they can bring something different to the offense
  • WR Emekga Egbuka, Kam Babb: Everyone talking about JSN and MHJ, but Egbuka is going to have a sneaky big year. Babb they are being cautious with but are cautiously optimistic he can have a role this season. Julian Fleming should see plenty of action too, but this source thinks Egbuka is too much of an explosive playmaker to get jumped when you look at touches and production.
  • OL Luke Wypler, Zen Michalski and Josh Fryar: A lot of confidence in starting 5, but Fryar and Zen are giving the staff confidence about the depth at tackle after that was a huge concern entering camp. Wypler’s leadership is at a new level and is getting back to the days where the center was the captain of the OL.
  • TE Mitch Rossi: he’s going to have a critical role in the offense and run game blocking as well as special units
  • DL: honestly whole DL has been very good this camp. Ty Hamilton is a guy who has impressed consistently. The two sophomore ends in JT and Sawyer are going to be good. And Zach Harrison has been rock solid. Lots of optimism around Tyliek Williams and Mike Hall taking a step as second year guys, and Taron Vincent being close to what they thought he could be if he can stay healthy.
  • LB Steele Chambers: they like the depth but Steele has been the guy standing out. Lots of confidence Eichenberg has a big year too.
  • CB Jyaire Brown and JK Johnson: Jyaire has been the most impressive as far as what they expected to what they’re getting. JK has really stepped up the last few days with Hancock out.
  • S Cam Martinez and Lathan Ransom: cam has been making plays all of camp. Ransom got back to full speed much faster than they thought. He has been making a lot of plays and forcing his way into a role in this defense. Martinez can also be a key special teams piece.

With that weak ass offensive line and rb room looking like a depression era food pantry, you better hope cj is RG3 x Joe Burrow x Dan Marino next year

To be clear I am not celebrating that young man’s season ending injury

Camp notes:
  • The injury to Pryor stinks because the kid has worked so hard and made so much progress, but there aren't as many concerns about the RB room as fans seem to be having. The top two of Tre Henderson and Miyan Williams were going to get lion's share of meaningful snaps anyway, and it will give Dallan Hayden now more of an opportunity to get time when the game is out of hand, especially earlier in the season.
  • BTW Ohio State really likes what they have seen out of Hayden so far in camp. This isn't a "holy crap this freshman is unreal" like we saw with Henderson or JK Dobbins in the past but there is confidence that he will be a really good player in Columbus from the early returns. Getting him some reps early in the year will help that development too. And he's absolutely the #3 back FWIW. If the first two guys go down in some terrible alternative reality, Hayden is the guy.
  • Nothing new on the receivers, you know they're all good. But my contact did want to call out Jayden Ballard for playing really well of late. Said he is also one of the fastest players on the team, if not the fastest. Some thoughts of Devin Smith when watching him at times---maybe less of a one trick pony when it's all said and done, though.
  • I think the staff feels really good about the tight end group. It was a concern coming into camp and while maybe they don't have the one stud like they usually do, they collectively think the job will get done. Cade Stover is maybe the best leader on the team and he loves being an active blocker. He's made progress in the passing game too. Mitch Rossi will be the unsung hero of the team and is critical to the run game being a success. Joe Royer has been coming on since bowl practices last December and will have a role. Gee Scott brings something different to the table. Early returns on Bennett Christian are strong too---may not play a ton this year, but they think he is a future Vannett/Heuerman/etc. type for them. Group may not be "top heavy", but it is "deep".
  • Somewhat of a concern when it comes to the interior OL. The concern is not that the players aren't good enough. More so that they need some more reps to gel and be comfortable playing together. Struggled a bit in the scrimmage last weekend, but these aren't abnormal growing pains for two new starters at guard at this point in camp. I think short yardage is something OSU will continue to work on.
  • On the DL, there seems to be optimism about how these guys will produce this year. Ty Hamilton is someone who continues to get praise. I am told out of all of the freshman, Caden Curry is furthest along and they love him.
  • On the back end, I was told look for some versatility to be utilized in various personnel packages. Kourt Williams brings a different dynamic as virtually a third LB in some packages. Chip Trayanum could have a carved out role. Knowles doesn't want to really rotate the linebackers much and Chambers/Eichenberg should be on the field most of the time, but they feel the safety personnel really gives them a lot of versatility to provide different looks in both run and pass scenarios. Guys like Williams, Cam Martinez, Lathan Ransom, etc. all provide different value.
  • As for health, I will just say while corner depth is definitely a concern from a numbers standpoint, health-wise while there have been some scares, my guy thinks they'll be just fine for Notre Dame.
