I'm a hold off on buying anything. I just reverted the firmware back down, and my speeds are where they're supposed to be.

The newest firmware must break the 2.4 radio, I read a review on Amazon and noticed someone mention it.

I just have to figure out why it eventually goes to shyt every so often.

Does the default firmware have a reboot scheduler? A nightly reboot set at some off time like 3:15 a.m. can do wonders for stability too.

Yeah you can. You just don't want to...heh. I finally broke down and did my place a little while back. Cost about $75 for the switch and cables (monoprice). I wired the living room, front and back of master bedroom, media room, and guest room. It was a bytch, but man, whenever I need to transfer anything those gigabit speeds have me all .

Was your house prewired with cat5/6 or did you have to rewire everything? Mine seems to have cat5/6 and just uses 2 of the 8 wires.

I'm thinking about doing this as a weekend project.

Is that a managed or unmanaged switch?

I did it myself. I used cat 6. Had to get a beast of a drill bit to go into the walls from the top. The trickiest part was dropping cable in insulated walls. Had to use a length of copper electrical conduit (I forget which gauge) as a leader (drilled through the conduit and zip tied the cat6 to the tail end). Non-insulated walls were cake. Just drill and drop.

I have a couple 75 ft runs which UTP cable is fine for. I wouldn't bother with STP cable unless you have 100 ft+ runs. Saves quite a bit of money.

It's this switch:

I haven't had any issues with it and it's inexpensive. I'd have no problem recommending it.
