It was impossible for them to keep growing at the same rate, covid gave them a crazy advantage for a few years. Once major players like Disney, Amazon & HBO caught up and started taking a slice of the pie, things had to even out.

Its still good for me atm, Better Call Saul & Ozark, their comedy selection etc. But most people can't afford 5 or 6 streamers at once so people end up dropping then coming back.

Not sure how its gonna play out going forward though.

Pare way down, but they are fighting a difficult fight to keep up quality and content to a mass audience of people who will consume a 200 million dollar show in 8 hours, shrug, and say "what you have?"

That's an unenviable place.

I still watch some stuff on Netflix, but mostly just HBO Max and one off movies, I don't watch that much TV in general. A few hours a week at most, and never binge.

The old original content was must see, "Blood Lines", was one of them, and the old Netflix model was for movie lovers, basically. That would hand pick a movie to be sent to them, then watch original compelling content to EVERYONE. When you have my 70 year old Dad telling me about C list content like Inventing Anna, you know Netflix is in a way different place.

he's right but the problem also is that their quality is decreasing and those must watch shows are gone
2012-2016 was the height of Netflix
stranger things
House of Cards
Bojack Horseman
Narcos
Black Mirror
daredevil
These shows were wide-reaching and hit almost every demo
now they have like 1 hit every 6 months and they're niche
squid games is the only one that hit every demo
And Squid Games was pretty much by accident too

Various factors at play here, in my opinion
  1. Price point doesn't meet quality. With inflation the way it is, people are going to be cutting back on stuff. Netflix is the most expensive of the major services, and arguably has the lowest average quality.
  2. Too much focus on quantity over quality. Quality stuff gets lost in the vast sea of garbage.
  3. Seemingly a complete inability to market anything they have but their biggest hits or shows with the biggest names in/behind it
  4. They add so much shyt it's almost impossible to find anything new to watch that's good unless you're a nerd that follows their release calendar (like me)
  5. They cancel stuff after only one or two seasons on the regular. It's a lot harder to justify committing to a show from the outset if you have no confidence it will last. Also goes back to the fact that so much shyt gets released that the vast majority of people don't even know when something gets added
  6. Their original movies are mostly trash
  7. They are bleeding quality licensed content because the studios are taking their content they owna nd putting it on their own streaming service
  8. They need to work better on their release calendar. Some shows take well over a year to 2+ years between seasons when each season only has like 8-13 episodes.
  9. They also need to better space out their biggest shows. If you want people to stay subscribed year round, you need to release at bare minimum one season of one of your most popular shows every month along with a big movie. Even if it ends up being a shyt movie, people will subscribe to give it a watch.
  10. They pulled out of Russia. I read that was like 700,000 subscriptions

The problem is that they just have way too much mid and average at best content. Back when there wasn't much competition they could get away with this. But now there are quality shows on various competing platforms so folks are skipping the mid/ average content cause there is no time to watch even just all the quality shows out. I dont need to browse netflix to find something to watch anymore... I'm behind on like 5 quality shows on other services and some of them are series I haven't even started yet. I still open netflix though to see if anything interest me right away but I don't got the time to watch mediocre shows anymore.

Netflix going out sad. I've been saying for years that their competition has overall better quality and they are cheaper.

Netflix steadily raising prices, and charge more for 4K content, while other alternatives don't. Netflix does get the most discussion going for their shows, and a lot of meme content, but so many people are sharing accounts/passwords that they can't even benefit fully off of the attention their shows get on social.

The Ghetto of Oz
  • Rose prices
  • Stronger competition
  • More competition
  • We outside again
Go back to slangin discs, lower the price of a brick, or step ya shyt up :francis:

All of that is cute and true but the real issue is Content

They don't have enough compelling Original content

They so worried about margins they cancel shows after 1 season

They need to own their content and keep pumping out winners

Otherwise what reason is there to keep a service that keeps going up in price and gaining you nothing

This wasn't true for years. This year is the first time I've felt the dearth in their content I was interested in

Have they even had a lot of hits? Only Hyped up show/movie I heard about was Squid Games. I’m sure there was at least 2 more things in the past, but I can’t recall. I guess you can add Coda. :ld:
