Trying to understand faith through the lense of rationality is like trying to fetch water with a butterfly net.
It's a pointless endeavor. Faith serves a specific purpose for people. Sometimes multiple purposes. People have a desire to believe in something bigger than themselves. If you take away their religion they'll just replace that with politics. Look at how right wingers treat Trump. They will not tolerate any slandering of him.
Look how Muslims treat Muhammed. He's a prophet but so is Jesus in the Quran and yet you almost never see Muslims showing the same level of respect to him as they do to Muhammed. There are posters right now who will read what I just wrote and be heated that I didn't add (PBUH) after mentioning his name. Humans are fallible. Humans can be corrupted, ruined, disgraced. But when one has faith in something that exists outside the realm of human weaknesses, that can motivate them to form communities and engage in massive projects.
Faith is a tool that can also of course be used to cause harm. Anyone who's studied history can see how Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism have all been co-opted by people who want to be violent and rapacious.
Christianity gets turned into mormonism or prosperity gospel. Hinduism gets turned into the militant hindufascism currently tearing through India. Islam gets turned into the political Islam that inspires the violent incels and rapists that constitute the Taliban and isis. Believe it or not there are violent Buddhists in south east Asia who are murdering other ethnic groups. I don't think I need to elaborate on what Israel has been doing in "defense" of Judaism. People will find peaceful or neutral ideologies and twist them to suit their goals. Look at how Soviet Russia was supposed to be the workers paradise but just ended up as a remix of tsarist Russia complete with the gulag the elite built back then to subjugate people.
There's one thing that the Bible shows that is backed up by undeniable mountains of evidence over the centuries: there is something fundamentally fukked up in the core of most human beings. There is an inherent sickness or poison within us that ruins everything beautiful or peaceful we are given. It's the lust for power. It's the desire for control. It infects and perverts everything humans are given.
