How the fukk does the police go from finding a rifle in the vehicle, to the person using the rifle as a primary weapon?

Anyone have access to the autopsy information? I remembering reading that it was definitely the rifle used, and the handguns were not. Was the rifle used on all victims?

How did the go from initially finding only 4 handguns and a rifle in the car to the real scenario?
