When Shai Gilgeous-Alexander signed a rookie scale extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, many NBA executives thought it would be a matter of time before a trade request followed. The Thunder were just starting a multi-year rebuild and were deep into asset-collection mode.

Now, with Oklahoma City rapidly improving, those rival executives have given up hope that Gilgeous-Alexander will ask for a trade. The Thunder were in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament last season and are a trendy pick to make the playoffs outright this season.

Gilgeous-Alexander is coming off an All-NBA season and looks primed to have another big year, coming off a terrific summer playing for Canada at the World Cup. Oklahoma City will also see 2022 second overall pick Chet Holmgren make his debut this season, after missing his rookie year with a foot injury.

He's in the best situation of any young player in the league, so he'd be hustling backwards if he asked out at this point.

The only reason moving him should have even been in the conversation is if OKC wanted to "reset" the clock on their rebuild since Giddey could probably ask for the max after this upcoming season and the clock ticking before their current core gets too expensive to keep.

Do you max Giddey?

He's a nut punching herb but that year with CP3 was huge for Shai's development.

I'd probably do it considering that it seems he's fixed his biggest issue coming out of the draft in his jumpshot and I don't think the gap between people like him, Haliburton and Melo is as big as it initially seemed or will be.

Everyone knows you dont request a trade until after you sign your 2nd deal...the Bradley Beal Dame Dolla supermax special
That's a different set of circumstances as those two players and Westbrook had 10 years of service with the same team so it was a different supermax altogether compared to others.

Now in the case of someone like Giannis is already at 10 years of service with the Bucks and eligible for that type of contract, so all of the talk of him leaving Milwaukee is overblown as he's not turning down that type of bread.

Only thing different is they didnt draft him and the amount will be more. He'll still have to play some more years in OKC before he can get the big one then request a trade.

This is the 2nd deal.

 @ waiting til you’re 9-10 years in. Players and media plot as soon as you’re extension eligible.
