Its a masterpiece.
Its heavy.
And if you black it hits very close to home and speaks truths.
I cut onions multiple times.
It's not very deep and lays everything right on the table but it's perfect for a plot to get the message across.
And you probably bought it instead of renting it. But its money well spent.
This film, like The Birth Of A Nation, suffers a lot from the fact that Nate Parker just isn't that good a filmmaker. Even if he was working on a limited budget it doesn't excuse how uninspired and downright amateuristic the film looks. It also doesn't really help that a lot of the actors are pretty bad as well. The dialogue carries all the subtlety of a brick through a glass window (not a bad thing mind you) and only few in the cast seemed up to par to sell it, specifically the black actors. Although I can imagine it was easier for Parker to find black actors willing to play those roles than finding a lot of white actors willing to play those roles.
Regardless, despite these shortcomings the film works well enough as a timely mixture of a mockumentary and that John Travolta film Mad City with some Spike Lee sensibilities sprinkled in. The trial and jury deliberation scenes are easily the best. Thought the ending could have been handled a bit better but that's that.
I thought the cop's sudden friendly attitude was too overdone. Like I get what Parker was going for with the cop realizing and carrying his sins but it was just not that believable.
And I know the film was done in 2019 and written before it but the news report lie about Jefferson "being in contact with Islamic extremists" could have been updated to "having ties to Antifa and BLM" for maximum accuracy of right wing news talking points. That would have hit extra hard following last week's events.

while the films might be a lil mediocre, we gotta put pressure on these muthafukkas!
MAKE them get better!
im not gonna just toss Black ideas and directors etc etc to the side cause the shyt might not be CLASSIC!
This film needed to be made. It's not a classic but it brings up important points seen and made by black people but never verbalised in media. shyt we say in Th[e Coli. I downloaded this film but I'm buying this film to support the brother.
Although
I'm not letting that cop of the hook. If that was me and the chip killed my family, I'm torturing him within an inch of his life and maiming him.
