MartyMcFly, you have some very good points but I still feel the album. I really believe that the NASIR hate is mostly due to the fact that its not the Nas that people wanted to hear after 6 years off. I certainly appreciate the work he put in with NASIR. Now don't get me wrong, I was born and raised on the south side of Chi-raq so I feel every single word of Nas' street shyt but as a mature listener with my eyes and ears open to more of the world and real, grown man shyt, I also truly feel the more mature subject matter as well. I just want more Nas music period. When we look back at all of his music, his entire discography as a whole, there will be evidence that he covered nearly every topic thoroughly. That he covered every style and type of music thoroughly as well, probably better than any other rapper ever. I can feel that.

Life Is Good is more mature grown music for me when it’s from Nas. This one felt like a step back which is my main issue with it. Mature Nas is Stay or Bye Baby or even the last portion of Gods Son. This one just didn’t feel right to me. That and his flow feels off as hell, which is my number one issue lol. Nas not being able to find a pocket is like the sun not shining every morning.

But if you messed with it and it still rocks then that’s good. Always happy when art is enjoyed by someone even if it’s not me.

Yes man and I’ll explain why lol.

Nas feels so out of pocket and out of his element here. Like extremely. Echo? That’s a Nas song. That’s him in his element and sounding like he cares and having the common decency to find a pocket on the beat. He put out 7 songs and there are maybe two that I really still mess with and would put on a Nas playlist. And even then they’d be low on the playlist.

He’s at his best observing the world around him and juxtaposing that world with his inner thoughts or sins or telling stories. This album is mostly him being hedonistic and that’s never worked for him. Kanye said he wanted to make the Nas he likes and apparently he likes I Am era Nas because for me, that’s what this feels like. Hollow and vapid and surface level. Even Cops Shot The Kid, which I like, is a lesser version of songs he’s made in the past with more insightful observations. Meanwhile on Echo, he says more in that 2-3 min that he did on this whole album.

After my initial hype wore off I just couldn’t get with this anymore and it’s real telling that as soon as it dropped he was already talking about the next album with swizz and rza and said this is something Kanye wanted to do. To me, that implies this was a Kanye album not a Nas album.

Just my thoughts tho. I couldn’t put it all into words until I heard Echo. But I’m glad you or anyone else are still feeling this album. I wish I was in the same boat. Just expected more from Nasty as I always do

Great analysis.

I disagree with the I Am... bit though. I Am... has some of Nas's best songs. "Adam & Eve" is the only song on Nasir that comes closest.

Didn't feel like a step back just felt rushed and incomplete but despite that everything from bonjour till the end is great music.

Nas usually opens up albums strong and I still don't like the intro and first song on this it's his worst flow wise. Cops shot is hampered by noisy production and white label just doesn't work from me. By the time you listen to Adam and eve it's like he's shifted into gear.

4 out of 7 great songs for me. I'll take that. This is still just an appetizer.
